HELP! Need mega-basic help downloading OXP's

I know about the WIKI OXP page, but I know NOTHING about programming.
Heres what I mean -
WIKI - The download will create a .ZIP file. Unzip it and a new folder will appear. Open this folder and you will see a folder ending .oxp and usually a README file. Move the folder ending .oxp into the Oolite AddOns folder.
How do I unzip the file? Once unzipped, how do I open it and move it into the addons folder? Indeed, where is the addons folder and how do I open it?
Running Oolite on Windows XP. Downloaded the Oolite folder onto my C drive.
SORRY - I know I'm mega-basic programming stupid.

Hi masona2
OK a brief period of deja vu - please don't double post - you'll get multiple answers from multiple sources and its confusing for all concerned.
Anyway, to answer your question.
If you have XP most of this is straightforward, once you've downloaded an OXP (making note of where your default download location is - it will say when XP asks if you want to save or run the file and you have selected "save"). Once downloaded go to the directory in Explorer where the file (.zip) is, and either double-click on it with the left mouse button, or highlight it (click once left button) and then right click and from the pop-up menu select "extract all" - you'll be presented with a dialogue box that tells you where the the contents of the zip will be extracted to - it defaults to creating a folder in the same location with the same name as the zip file - for you I would suggested this is fine. Once you're told it has extracted, you can browse into this newly created folder - depending on how the creator of the zip file did it, you'll find some files (one of which is usually a readme, plus one which will be called something like "whizzynewship.oxp" - the .oxp is a whole directory containing all the info needed to make the oxp work in oolite. Don't go into the oxp, right click on it and select "copy" from the pop up menu.
Now browse to the Addons folder of Oolite (C:\Oolite\AddOns) and go into this folder, right click into the window this opens and select "paste" from the pop up menu - after a little while a new folder will appear which should be "whizzynewship.oxp" (or whatever). When Oolite is started it will find this new oxp when it searches the AddOns folder and hey-presto, the contents of the new oxp should be added to the game.

Hooraaaay!
Thanks DaddyHoggy,
Did It! Downloaded the OXP and then pasted 'CustomSounds' into my Addons folder, loaded the game and Bingo!
Very StarTrekkie!
Thanks again.

Good. Now you can start on some of the other OXP's on the Wiki. Go with flavour and stuff like Neolite ships and Griffs all in one ship package first. Adds eye candy but does not change the game itself. (But all in your own time)

Hi Gimi
Err, whats a Griff?
And what do you mean by go with flavour? Keep to the spirit of the game?

This is a Griff. And a nice and talented chap he is too. His OXPs are here and various other places, and images of them are in the screenshots thread.
Flavour means how the game looks (the designs and appearance of the ships and other entities, without adding any new ones usually). As opposed to changing the game itself aside from it's appearance.

What Gimi and Thargoid said... and if you want beautiful planets and moons, try System Redux.
You'll need a decent graphics card for Griff's ships.
Enjoy!

In oolite - flavours are usually things that change game appearance have no impact on game play (they don't make the game easier or harder or change the way systems are created or how trading occurs).
So, the Neolite ships pack replaces all the old Elite ships with more stylish modern looking versions (but they play exactly the same - only visually different) (see here:
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Neolite_Ships)
and Griff's ships add Tim Burtonesque "re-imaginings" of the original ships, more
industrial in feel, with sublime use of shaders - definitely worth it if you have a shader capable card and the oomph! to run them. (see here:
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Griff_Industries)
Then you've got Famous Planets which adds more full-bodied planetary descriptions and gorgeous planetary textures. (see here:
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Famous_Planets_OXP)
And you can update your HUD if you want to get away from the classic Elite one (see here:
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/HUD_images_here)
Snoopers adds news stories to your docking feed at random intervals (see here:
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Snoopers)
Then you could add the Tionisla Graveyard and update Lave so they are like like they are in the Dark Wheel Novella.
I'd also recommend "Your Ad Here" - although this does change the game balance slightly as the extra stations do occasionally offer bargain basement prices on normally very expensive items - but the stations are a sight to behold and the ads are brilliant. (see here:
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Your_Ad_Here!)
There are many others but these are the prettiest non-gameplay altering ones I can think of.

So Sorry, me running along without a care in the world.
Griff (
https://bb.oolite.space/profile.php?mode ... file&u=709) is one of the regular contributors to this bb and to the Game. You will find his posts everywhere on the board. He has made an absolutely brilliant set of replacement ship models for Oolite (Commonly referred to as Griff's ships or just Griff's). You can read about it in this thread
https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?t=6586 or, even better, have a look at the Griff Industries page on the Wiki.
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Griff_Industries.
The Wiki page has download links at the bottom of the page.
Similarly, Simon B (
https://bb.oolite.space/profile.php?mode ... ile&u=2248), has made the equally brilliant Neolite set. Different style but I think he complements Griff very well. Wiki page here:
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Neolite_Ships
Recommend you try one of them (not both quite yet) and see how it works out.
A quick question, do you know what version of Oolite you are running.

While I was compiling my reply this thread exploded:
Have to be quicker about it next time I think. (Don't eat while you type, and don't let Wife interrupt)
Thargoid; how do I make links in my posts that don't show the URL?

Is that an option?

I actually followed that link and was thoroughly confused, I thought my brain had exploded or I went into some sort of parallel universe where everything is exactly the same!!! I was just about to call
UNIT and request military assistance when I realised you were linking to the thread I was already in and I should get some sleep since it took me so long to realise.
