Can anyone help my son?

Post by masona2 »

My 16 year old son is fascinated by the fact I am gripped by this game.

He asked me if there are any similar online games out there he can play.

I don't know. Can anyone recommend anything?

EVE Online. Not exactly Oolite, but definitely multiplayer.

It may be a silly question, but why not just give him a copy of Oolite itself. It's free and open source. He can tell his friends about it.

I don't know why,

but he just does not see 'just playing a game' as a challange.

He, like all his friends, want to go on-line to kick a real persons ass (as he puts it).

Ahh..... teenagers.

Well, Eve Online, as mentioned here, is probably your best bet, but I found it infuriatingly difficult to get into. The well established players in the game dominate far to much for my taste. Also, I didn't really have the time that is required to get anywhere within a reasonable timeframe.

Havn't played EVE, but I did play Star Trek Online, I wouldn't recommend S.T.O. to anyone, its a terrible terrible game, the people who made it should be ashamed of themselves.

Given how modifyable (is that a word?) Oolite is, they could challenge each other to write the best/most tough/hardest/prettiest/sexiest OXP and then exchange them between each other and challenge each other with them perhaps?

If they know some Javascript or can find the right end of GIMP or Wings3D or something it could be interesting?

Ooh, or they could do CoreWars, Oolite style: Write your AI, then pit it against other players' AIs. Unfortunately, unless your son is a total nerd he isn't likely to approve.

Actually, that could become a very cool idea: design your ship, within certain parameters of course, then write an AI for it, then fly a player ship as a spectator as they fight.

Hoping for an Oolite-like multi-user thrill myself, I tried a few different online games. I didn't like Eve Online. I want to be IN my ship not watching over its shoulder! Evochron Legends wasn't too bad. You're back in the cockpit with a big universe to explore, but the graphics and gameplay aren't overwhelmingly great.
By far the most Oolite-like experience from an online game was from Vendetta Online. The physics of flying around and combat (I was using a joystick) was very similar to Oolite. Missions were well explained and managed, there's a big variety of ships and upgrades available, and the graphics were very good. Plus if you're skint like me, the free trial is generously long! If I had enough cash coming in that's the online game I'd try.

Send him out of Lave to Leesti with a fresh Cobra MkIII and 100Cr to his name. Tell him to pull back on his joystick as he hyperspaces as it gets him there faster....

Except it's modifIable (not a 'y') - yep, it's a word. Not sure what you'd get for it at Scrabble, though. :?
You really want to know what's gonna happen, Ambassador? Boom. Boom boom. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. BOOM!
