NVIDIA OpenGL Driver - crash to desktop

Post by Lestradae »

Just experienced a crash to desktop and got the Vista message:

"The NVIDIA OpenGL Driver encountered an unrecoverable error and must close this application.

Error 14"

Anyone any idea as to what might be the problem?

What's your card and what drivers are you running?

8500GT and Vista home premium SP2 with 191.06 drivers.

Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

Drivers: 8.15.11.8603

Vista Home premium SP 2 also.

I should add that searching via Google turned up loads of this error message - usually in conjunction with OpenGL - heavy games and a NVIDIA - Vista and also Win7 combination, but I found no fix that people seemed to agree on.

Open up the Nvidia control panel, bottom left of that window should be a button marked "System info", which will give you the Nvidia version number for the driver.
Anything pre 185.xx needs updating to 185.xx or 191.xx, but avoid the very newest, it's not had a good rep.

My 191 driver reports at 8.16.11.9107, which would mark it out as a newer one than yours. I'd suggest a reboot in safe-mode, and running a driver-cleaner utility (several available on the net) before installing 191.06 (which is available on the Nvidia site still under outdated/beta)

8.15.11.8603 = 186.03

Why thanks DH :)
I'd suggest a small driver update.

Avoid the very latest, 191.06 is pretty much perfect on my system.
