Maximum number of subentities

quick question, probably asked it before;
a) What is ther maximum number of sub entities a ship can have?
b) does this change from version to version of oolite?
I have a couple of things on the wings drawing board and the answer will effect the design.

No theoretical limit afaik, but I wouldn't want to try with more than 60 or so...

Well I'd probably draw a halt at about 12 or so with several interchangable variations. Maybe going as high as 20 for the really evil ships.
Yes, after all the broo-ha-ha about making the game easier it's time to make it harder.

If there is a maximum of 2047 entities, what is the maximum number of subentities?
Specifically as well, would it be possible to have a player ship with rather simple subentities but lots of them, say from 50 to as much as 1000 while having the npc's ships with say 50 or less each, again with each subentity not having a crazy number of vertices?
What are the current limits in the latest version of oolite? Are there any inherent problems to the example above and if so what workarounds or solutions are available or advisable?

No, only the explicit main entities have a limit. Those entities are kept in a special array for keeping track of their 3D whereabouts in the system. In oolite 1.65 that limit was about 500 and is currently 2047. For subentities there is no limit counter although every subentity needs updating and will further slowdown your computer.
