but it seems to me, that legal status is the way the game determines who are enemies, but then there are thargoids as well
matters i would like to discuss are:
do thargoids attack everything they come across? is this because of their legal status? if so is that true for ordinary fugitives too?
is it the thargoid legal status that makes the navy attack them? or is it because they are thargoids?
and if the thargoids are fugitives, why don't they attack each other?
i know its a lot of questions, but i have the idea for an OXP, either something like a peaceful thargoid delegation, or a new alien(or renegade human) race- tho i haven't figured out what i want them to do yet
however
i know that a peaceful thargoid ship would need a navy escort as well as thargoid warships too- all not firing at each other! and by and large ignoring anything that doesn't fire on them, but at the same time, the navy would be able to fire on anything that attacks the delegation, the thargoids would not be able to, but they would be able to if the attack was from a naval(or galcop) vessel. at the same time the thargoids in the delegation would be able to become hostile if an attack took place from other thargoids not in the delegation, and the navy would be able to respond in kind
sorry I'm at work, and waiting for some clients to fax some stuff before i can go home for the day!

Everything that isn't a Thargoid but is a ship/station gets attacked. You lot make the place look so untidy.

It's their AIs that do it It's because we are scanClass CLASS_THARGOID, hence alien and hostile to your puny police forces. We don't have anything as primitive as legal status.

Because we're not as stupid as humans We aren't fugitives, we're aliens. Look in the little bracket on your ID computer We don't bother with silly things like clean/offender/fugitive.

Let me know who the delegates are, and I'll have them shot. Any other alien or human who uses our scanclass technology will be treated as such.

Such a traitor ship would not be considered a Thargoid, hence cannot bear the scanClass CLASS_THARGOID.

Not really. I do remember situations where a tharg battleship shot down it's frigates because I used them to shield myself from the battleship

In all honesty, I'd see any military ships that come from the Duvalian Empire or the Federation as 'Alien'...

Shouldn't that be "In all hostility, I'd see any ship that carries cargo as 'Alien'"?

Uhhm, has anyone met my new crew member? The statement above was drawn up by Mister Gantrel (first name unknown), a small black ursoid solicitor on long-term contract from LittleBear Legal Services. I think he'll fit in just nicely...

perhaps now, any ideas as to the principals behind different ships suddenly turning on each other?
if its impossible, its impossible
but and think about this- the application of this if we come up with it within the principals of the core code of the game would be amazing
two ships could give the impression of interaction

Most things are possible in this kind of area with suitable AIs, and with a linked AI and js-script then the world is your Lavian tree-grub.
Ships interacting is not so difficult. I'm working on something at the moment where a squad of 3 fighters co-ordinate their weapon deployment for example.

If you were to create an OXP with Thargoid ship models but not the Thargoid role in their definition... then you'd have friendly Thargoids... potentially... right?

This could be a use for the 'alternate' Thargoid ships Griff created.. and the idea of using them for some "other" type of Thargoid was kicked about back when it was first released..

If the ship had a non-CLASS_THARGOID scanClass, and a suitable AI, then yes you would. The scanClass identifies them as Alien (that is how most AI's will be triggered to attack them), and the AI defines how they themselves act and react.
For example if you copied the standard Thargoid Warship but removed its scanClass entry (so making it the default yellow neutral scanClass), changed it's AI to (for example) traderAI.plist and removed it's missile_role key (or else it will launch Thargons that will just turn around and attack it) then you'll essentially have a Thargoid trader.

But it would be a mess! The main premise is that thargoids are The Enemy. It wouldn't make much sense if some ships - undistinguishable from the enemy ones - were to suddenly be friendly. Even if they were, most GalCop people would still want to attack them if only on purely xenophobic principles: 'the only good Thargoid is a dead one' etc. etc.
You'd have to have a very convincing backstory for things to be otherwise...
On the other hand, there's a possible interesting scenario: a high-up Thargoid wants to resolve the unproductive conflict, you get contacted by secret services, and you need to defend the 'good Thargoid' from NPC attacks, until it meets with a general at a specific rendezvous.

Consider the hassles
the Oresrians get, just for looking like and
flying similar ships to the Thargoids...
