Boggling the mind

Post by virgopunk »

Ok, so I've downloaded Oolite 1.73.4. I'm doing ok so far (still harmless but making a few bob) but obviously the OXPs are where it's at. I've read thru the list of what available but quite frankly it all seems quite a lot to take in.

Is there a kind of thread anywhere that discusses which OXPs are best to go for from the get go? Is Realistic Space Yards the daddy? I don't want to start adding stuff that might b*gger things up are slow my trusty T43 Thinkpad to a crawl but I do want to experience as much of the good stuff as I can.

Some sort of rating of the OXPs might be good for the Jamesons amongst us?

Many thanks in advance for any pointers you could give.

I'd go for the Griff Pack he just released, System Redux 1 (2 is a WiP), Asteroid Storm (good early mission), Long Way Round... Random Hits once you get at least a little iron on your ass. Oh, Commies, Dictators, Anarchies are all good flavor OXP's.

Really just depends on what you're after: Missions, Ships, Scenery, Flavor... Or an Argellian Love Slave in a Guerrilla suit. Named Pete.

If I recall, Realistic Shipyards is not advisable unless you have around 3GB of RAM.. you might get away with 2GB.. I'm not sure, never having tried it on my 1.5GB machine. :(
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Fuel station, interstellar help, are quite helpful and Black Monks for the adventurous

Traffic control and Lave academy are good for beginners,
FTZ adds some neat stuff

I down loaded most of the oxp's and store them in a folder 'oolite extras' that puts the folder right next to the game. makes it easy to chop and change which oxps you have in any session.

My favourite's at the moment are Random hits and local hero. And ye you really want Griffs ships, they look awesome.

I only have 1Gig ram at 1.2GHz. Can't run ship yards, freezes the machine.. 1 frame an hour, well ever few seconds in battle.
Using indevidual oxp's I have all the other ships I want and only run missions to do with which ever galaxy I'm in at the time.
Not having all the eye candy helps too. So now even in big battles I have no noticable jerkyness. Mm, is that a word? Must be I just used it.
LOOK OUT!!!
OOPS..

I would second many of the recommendations made above. I have installed on my machine and I can strongly recommend them all.

Anarchies
Aquatics
Assassins
Behometh
Bigships
Catacylsm
Deep Space {irates (I didn't like the feature of being able to fly off the main spacelane to avoid other ships)
Famous Planets
Fuel Station
Galactic Navy (more fun missions)
Griff's Ships
Neolite (Simon B's designs are every bit as great as Griff's imo)
Neolite Companion
Neolite Wolfies
Military Fiasco (a fun challenging mission)
Oo-Haul
Planetfall
Random Hits
System Redux
Thargoid Wars
Thargoid Carrier (ok, I admit, these are just great big credit Piniatas).
Thargorn Threat
UPS Courier

We have lift off

Post by virgopunk »

Thanks for the feedback. It looks like this is a fairly common question. I've just loaded the funky planet/moon textures and a new audio set which made me smile before I left for work this morning. It also confirmed how easy the OXPs are to install so i shall add a few more of your recommended mods this evening. I'm not sure how my girlfriend is going to take all this though

Thanks all.

It'll be "you're playing that game again".
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

That game!

Post by virgopunk »

Heh! Actually it took her while to realise is was a game because I hadn't actually done anything for a few minutes due to being mass locked on my way to the station and the HUD looking a bit scientific

Nowadays, Oolite is unique, in that there are points of the game where you can go and get other short things done.
Things I have done while mass locked, cleaned my room, brushed my teeth,
checked my email, facebook, oolite boards, checked my stocks (I think in GB you call them shares) ,called people, stretched. changed clothes, made myself a snack. I have felt guilty that a python's urgent plea for help went unanswered because I was in the other room and once I apparently went straight through a fuel station while unattended which was bizare.
I also got attacked while on a corporate system (thankful for audio alarm).

Anyways the upshot is, sailing into Zaonce is a good time to give some attention to your girlfriend, so she doesn't feel like an OOlite widow.
