Linux or Windows for Oolite

Post by Cody »

Question!

Does Oolite 1.72.2 run any better in Linux (specifically Suse 10.1 64-bit)
than in Windows.

From what I have seen from Oolite on Linux, it runs exactly the same as on Windows. But of course your mileage may vary, depending on what exactly you mean when you say "better".

I run Oolite on a Athlon XP 2800+, 2GB RAM, 128MB FX5900XT gfx under dual boot Ubuntu (7.10) and XP (SP3) - it seems to run fractionally faster under Linux than it does under XP (for me at least)

Probably depends on your graphics hardware, if it's good enough for shaders... sometimes the Linux drivers are better than Windows, sometimes the opposite!

I expect playing it in a window works better on Linux than it does on Windows...

Maybe I'll try it. I ought to become more familiar with Linux anyway.
Is Oolite okay on Suse 10.1 64-bit?

I think that Oolite is still 32 bit code... Any Linux with the proper libraries on should work.

But if you are unfamiliar with Linux, maybe Windows could give you less problems until you get average in 'Linux universe' too :)

The oolite linux package is for 32bit only, as far as I know, due to the fact that autopackage does not support x86_64 yet. I hope someone proves me wrong here.

Hello,
I have just read your query regarding Oolite best run in Linux or Windows. According to me Linux is the best option. It is running smoothly in Linux but Windows is also good.

I'm just going to add this in here, so as not to clog up the boards:

Do all the mod packages work on the Linux version? And can I run Oolite on Fedora 10/11?

OXPs are independent of architecture and OS, so everything should be able to be run on Linux in the same way it can be run on Mac and Windows.

As far as Fedora is concerned, we have successful installation report on Fedora 11. Not sure about 10, though.
