About planets

Post by pagroove »

- A System Redux 2> More textures (maybe 100?)
or
- Galaxy 1 pack
All 256 planets of Galaxy one (except the 46 of Famous Planets 2)
In normal resolution (1024-512)

Or
(preffered option)
Make the auto planet Generation in 1.73 so good that it can create (automatically) the following types of planets:

Ice
Desert
Jungle
Sea
Island
mixed (earth type)
Mixed (warm)
Mixed (cold)
Vulcano
Gas
Venus type (half gas)

Any planetary suggestions, ideas?

Sounds good ;)

And I assume that the method to determine the type each planet takes will also be procedural, so that for example a planet will always remain a Jungle planet in every iteration of every player's savegame :P

That, however, would cover only the non-famous planets if you will :P

I've been quietly working on System Redux 2.0 with consent from CaptKev. I was planning on 64-ish textures, determined by economy, tech level, and planetary radii. Each texture is being built at 8k x 4k, and will include normal maps. Kaks was working on having planets use the same / similar rendering code as ships, and so would have all the same support / features that ships do.... Normal Maps, shaders, etc...

I'm still fairly early on in the process, but I can post a partial image later on if someone's intersted.

Most definitely post a teaser image - that sounds awesome!

Taken from Rise of the Kirin Chapter 7

"the snow covered world of Tibecea."

"Resting on the outer reaches of Galaxy 1, this planet lay within a hair's breadth of the habitable zone of its parent star system. The population, colonists who had been reduced to a feudal state by the planet's harsh environment, seldom ventured within half a kilometer of the surface. The only visible evidence of them being there at all were the insulated smelting stacks that billowed plumes of acrid black and yellow smoke into the thick, pristine white atmosphere. It was a snowball, an inhabited snow ball but a snowball."

Sounds very good. How much textures are you aiming for?
Maybe 4/5 of every type of planet?

As I said - 64 textures. Roughly 8 per economy.

I'll get a screenshot up soon, just trying to have it be a realistic representation of what would be seen in-game.

Quite likely will... Let me get a little closer on a few of the surrounding parts, and I can let you know after.

This is the first time I've rendered this with diffuse and normal maps... It's being rendered using Celestia, NOT OOLITE. So in-game may be different, but this should give a fairly good representation. I've not included clouds because, as I understand it, they will be procedurally created in 1.73. I know I have a lot of work to do, and a lot of learning... But hey, that's what this is for. :P

This texture should be fairly familiar to anyone who has downloaded or played around with FP2.0. The base texture was used as Anarlaqu, but has been / is being heavily modified for inclusion in this OXP. I have not yet finished the northwest portion of the continent in the image.

Constructive criticism is appreciated, provided I can understand what you're telling me. :P

Well, without further adieu....

Just ... wow :D

If I imagine this with clouds and glowmapped cities on the nightside - how far Oolite has come and will come!

Looking very much forwards to seeing that ingame one day!

Very good! You are getting better and better each time. About the clouds in 1.73- they are more like a thin haze so you still have to draw them if you want thicker layers. But they are a nice addition.
