'Sun'ray ?

Post by Captain Sumo »

There I was, happy cruising around Galaxy 1, saving up for a Fer de Lance, when suddenly some geezer offers me a 'Sun'ray for sale, with extras, for a mere 300000 Cr! I'm thinking to myself: "what is this thing?". I can't find any mention of it here or in the Wiki, so a naturally decide to take it out for a test run into Witchspace, and it seems to be a fast, maneoverable, capable, fighting ship. Kind of like an Asp, but with a bit of cargo capacity to boot!

But here's the worrying thing. It looks like all those other 'Rays' that inhabit the Commie systems. I'm worrying that maybe this is the 'Trabant' of the spacelanes, and that at some point the entire thing is going to turn to a pile of mushy cardboard that's going to double in value every time I fill the fuel tanks! I'm about to jump to Galaxy 2, where the Constrictor is waiting for me, so I want to make sure that I've got good hardware.

Does anyone have experience of flying these things? What can I expect?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Captain Sumo,

Welcome to the boards!

The Sun 'Ray' was developed by communists but is a perfectly working ship. You can play well with it.

You would have gotten it for far less cash had you bought it via the oxp which's page you find down there in my sig, though

Compared to the Cobra Mk III, the Sun 'Ray' is a bit faster and more maneuverable, has about the same level of energy banks- and recharge-wise, but is lacking in combat power (only one laser - fore -, only one missile shaft and you can't equip a military shield onto one). Weakest point is its next to nothing cargo capacity.

So if you plan on a military or combat career of sorts, I'd suggest changing ship again. The Caduceus has been said to be a good alrounder for that. The Sun 'Ray' is a good ship more for courier runs (do you have the UPS oxp in? That's there).

Hope you can use the info 8)

Well like I said, I've only taken it for a test drive into combat. I haven't actually docked and saved with one yet. I could have lived with the small cargo capacity (I'm earning my money on precious metal/gem-stone contracts at present), but I do want a combat capable ship.

I think I have to try out Realistic Shipyards. It's one of the most talked about OXP's around here!

This was helpful info. I will move on until I can get the ship I want! Thanks!

I have just been attacked by a 'Sun' Ray in Galaxy 1, a poor industrial anarchy called Eninre. My lagel status is Clean, and so is the 'Sun' Ray.

That feels most unfair ... if I shoot back I'll become an Offender. For once in my life, I'll just have to run away.
Flying a Cobra Mk I Cobbie 3 with nothing but Explorers Club.OXP and a beam laser 4 proper lasers for company :D
Dropbox referral link 2GB of free space online + 500 Mb for the referral: good for securing work-in-progress.

You'll only become an Offender if the police see you shooting at a Clean ship. If there are no cops in the vicinity, burn him a new one and all will be well. If there are cops in the vicinity, and they see him shooting you (and you're Clean), then he'll get an Offender tag and then not only can you smite him with furious vengeance etc., you'll get a bounty for him, too ...
