TOGY and speed testing...

Post by Screet »

Hello,

I've recently run a few tests. I improved the Vista framerates already massively by installing Oolite to C:\oolite before running these FPS tests, before that, the framerate at geteve did drop below 1fps.

I'm curious as how TOGY should look: With the 4870x2 all adders have metal textures, all monuments are red. With the X800XTPE all objects have metal textures.

The 4870x2 is installed on a machine with 4 GiB 667 RAM on a Phenom 9500 with Vista 32, the X800XTPE is installed on a machine with 2 GiB 400 RAM on a 3400+ with XP X64, both processors internally using the same speed.

TOGY-test without any other oxp's
4870x2 with UAC 13-23 fps (17-20 usually) approach: 30 fps
4870x2 without UAC 13-23 fps (16-18 usually) approach: 28-33 fps
X800XTPE 23-24 fps approach: 50+ fps

I'm curious as to which framerates other users get. To test this, only install this oxp: http://oosat.alioth.net/files/TGY.zip
Then use a fresh jameson and head for tionisla (only two jumps), press pause and then shift-f to activate framerate display

FYI, I did run more tests - those are more interesting because there are many more differently looking/textured objects to be seen:

Geteve-test WITH oxp, oolite installed to C:\oolite, UAC on
4870x2 X800XTPE
1st launch: 10-15 fps 12-18 fps
2nd launch: 6-10 fps 10+ fps (up to 18, but typically slightly over 10)
3rd launch: 4-6 fps 8-10 fps (practically stays there with two more launches)

Geteve-test WITH oxp, oolite installed to C:\oolite, UAC off
4870x2
1st launch: 8-9 fps
2nd launch: 5 fps
3rd launch: 5 fps

another time, UAC on again:
1) 5-13 (typically 10)
2) 4-7 (typically 5)
3) 4-5 (typically 5)

Without oxp
4870x2: 60 fps (only three ships visible, UAC turned ON)
X800XTPE: 56-64 fps (only one ship visible, didn't encounter more, Riedquat was no fun this time!)

Oh, I didn't tell...I was running with 1280*1024 resolution.

Really, you should dare to run these tests!

I got a report from a user with this system:
Laptop Intel Core 2 Duo, nur T7200, 2GHz, 2GB RAM, XP Pro (32Bit), NVidia Go 7950 1920x1200px.

With TOGY he had 30 FPS, with Geteve he had 3-5 times more FPS than I had!

Thus, it most probably make you feel great...unless you've also got an ATI card, but a user with a 4850 also was running the TOGY much faster than I was. He also scored in the range of the nVidia Go 7950.

I will run on my system when I'm back on my Oolite PC and let you know - although I can only run up to 1024x768.

Can you post a screenie of what you feel is the optimum point to view TOGY to give the fps you want to see and I will try to replicate

BTW was does UAC stand for?

And do you run with shaders off, simple or full?

My machine is very old though so I'm not sure if it'll help but will certainly give you a lower bound! My machine is: Athlon XP2800+, 1GB Dual channel DDR333, Ubuntu 7.10, 128MB FX5900XT

I could make some, but I used the simple method:
first check fps while approaching from witchpoint once the graveyards station becomes visible as a few pixels, and then just fly into the cloud of ships/monuments and fly around in it, watching the fps rate.

It's that annoying User Acces Control thing which causes virtualization under Vista...

Full shaders - then I also see that the X800XTPE renders correctly while the 4870x2 fails to do so...

Would be interesting as to how it compares!
