[Solved] How to load 1.72

Hi All,
Well, I've taken the advice dispensed here, and decided to load up 1.72 - I'm currently on 1.65.
Being something of newbie to Linux (Ubuntu 8.10 acksherly), my previous install came via the package manager, which was of course a piece of piss.
Now, though, I've got my 1.72.x86.package bundle sat on my desktop and I don't seem to have anything associated with it to get it loaded.
Would some kind soul please put me out of my misery and tell me how to load the damn thing up? I'm relatively computer literate, but if you suggest something that's likely to be unfamiliar to a new linux convert, please tell me the where's and whyfore's.
Many thanks,
Si
