[Solved] How to load 1.72

Post by mostly rubbish »

Hi All,

Well, I've taken the advice dispensed here, and decided to load up 1.72 - I'm currently on 1.65.

Being something of newbie to Linux (Ubuntu 8.10 acksherly), my previous install came via the package manager, which was of course a piece of piss.

Now, though, I've got my 1.72.x86.package bundle sat on my desktop and I don't seem to have anything associated with it to get it loaded.

Would some kind soul please put me out of my misery and tell me how to load the damn thing up? I'm relatively computer literate, but if you suggest something that's likely to be unfamiliar to a new linux convert, please tell me the where's and whyfore's.

Many thanks,

Si

The package is a runnable shell script… which will install an appropriate installer, then run itself with that installer.

To use it, do:

Code: Select all

% cd <wherever>
% chmod 755 oolite-1.72.2.x86.package
% ./oolite-1.72.2.x86.package
The next time, you should be able to just double-click the package.

Coo, ta!

Thanks for the info - I just wish that this sort of thing was more visible to new users. I wouldn't have guessed that the suffix .package meant it was a script.

Cheers,

Si

It got me too! Even the mighty Ahruman I think was initially perplexed! So, you're in good company!

It's interesting if you open it my mistake in Windows - normal text at the start and then thousands and thousands of lines of "stuff" (which I guess is the binary payload)

@mostly rubbish
If this is resolved, please, edit your first post subject to "How to load 1.72 (SOLVED)".
