Still got the game installed on my little used XP partition - and you're right - it's sublime!

Yeah, was actually part of that fsopen project, in the very beginning, before there was such a thing as fighter beams (read beam weapons on figher/bombers).nijineko wrote:anyone check out fsopen? open source version, nicely done. also has a battlestar galactica conversion mod, and a babylon 5 conversion mod.
And the community before there ever was Freespace 2...
I think my only survived contribution was mod support...
wonder if that is even in there still, since my method was more
a hack, of the cd rom load of pack files function...
Also the very infancy of my c++ skills... which was virtualy non existant...
but i sure could modify some Defines, its allways nice to look at 1000 ships fighter class uslysses attacking a deamon class cruiser. Just a darn shame the network wrapper couldnt handle more than 127 ship types, which lead to collapse of any multiplayer game using my modified build...
Now i know why, i was not to sure of it back then why it broke multiplayer...
but with 1001 ships, fps was down to 15, and collision detection faulted...
but it sure looked nice....

I was doing bug reporting (and fixing) for FSO back in the days of the 3.6.5 version. Was invited to join the project, but I did not have the time for that back then.nijineko wrote:anyone check out fsopen? open source version, nicely done. also has a battlestar galactica conversion mod, and a babylon 5 conversion mod.
In any case, very soon after that I discovered Oolite...

I almost started working on improving the Mac port last year, but went “No… must… work… on… Oolite” instead.

yeah, you can only go so far with Freespace 2, since it is mission based, pick a campaign and fly the missions until there is no more... then pick a new campaign.Ahruman wrote:I almost started working on improving the Mac port last year, but went “No… must… work… on… Oolite” instead.
The Oolite universe is much more sympathetic.
I just recalled, i even made a shielded Lucifer(instead of it just being invulnarble) for someone to use in the fs1 port to fs2...
