How do I upgrade my laser to a beam laser? I don't even see an option in a station. I am using Ubuntu 8.04.

Press '3' when docked in a station and you'll see a list of equipment you can buy - including beam lasers. The higher the tech-level of the system you're in the more equipment is available to purchase.
The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
