changing gun sights?

Post by bulrush »

How does one change the look of the gunsight crosshairs on the screen? I would like my crosses to be closer together in the center, where they cross. There is too much space there for my taste.

As far as I know this is hard-coded in the game. The sights change according to what sort of laser you're carrying, but I don't think there's any way (beyond a major code overhaul) of closing them up.

This might be the OXP you are looking for,
Fighter HUD

Or one of the other HUDs on the OXP wiki

You can edit the overlay to whatever you want.

Fear not, you were quite correct; the green crosshairs are in the main code. But, you can augment them using one of the HUD OXPs. I use the Woolfswood's Variants OXP one, as it gives a big radar scope and a nice minimal instrument panel. I have edited the HUD.PNG to add a ranging reticule, which helps me deal with the parallax compensation. At ranges less than 900m, on a Cobra III, the laser hits a fair way below the crosshair.

They change when you cloak as well. From solid to nicely faded at the edge.

Ideally gun sights would be OXP-able along with the rest of the HUD.

(and of course it would also be really nice to be able to control the placement and size of the in-flight messages from hud.plist)

The main problem with fixing the gun sights is that I will no longer be able to blame them when I miss! As it currently stands, they are an excellent excuse for missing.

Where can I get this hud? And how do I make it available on my hud PCC?

I just installed wolfwood's variants OXP. That gave me the nice clean instrumentation. Then I edited the PNG image in the cobra III folder, made it full screen, 1024x768 and drew a green cross in the middle. Oh, and I had to adjust some of the figures in the corresponding plist file too, to make it line up properly. I could send you the amended files if you like. Or someone wid da skillz could make it a standalone OXP?? :)
