Win Vista Home Premium

Post by Pappy55 »

I am posting on behalf of a friend who I just introduced to oolite and he cant run it. He has tried compatablity mode, he is longed in as administrator.

The program goes to load and seams normal till the main window appears then nothing and vista throws up the error that the exe has stoped working.

Does anyone have any info on this?

Have you looked in the PC-section of the board? I remember having read over there something about some issues with Vista.

*****

The obvious advice for your friend would of course be: Get yourself a decent computer with a decent OS. (sorry, couldn't resist )

Think there is a problem with Vista and Oolite may not run on it. Is fine with XP though.
OXPS : The Assassins Guild, Asteroid Storm, The Bank of the Black Monks, Random Hits, The Galactic Almanac, Renegade Pirates can be downloaded from the Elite Wiki here.

Still, it would be good to know why it is crashing. We need more information though. Oolite version, system specs and the contents of stderr.txt would be the minimum requirements before anyone can even attempt to troubleshoot.

However, there is something that can be tried, just in case it helps any: Go to the Oolite SVN repository and into the Windows dependencies folder:
http://svn.berlios.de/viewcvs/oolite-li ... deps/DLLs/
From there, download gnustep-base.dll, libiconv-2.dll and libcharset-1.dll.
Rename the ones in [Oolite install folder]/oolite.app to something else and put there the ones downloaded. Then try to run the game again. These dlls are newer versions than the ones that came with the latest version and may or may not help, but it's woth a try.

I remember the fuzz when Apple released a "public Beta" of OS X 10.1 (was it?).

Actually all that Microsoft has ever done is to release "public Betas" or even alphas, but shamelessly they never have openly called them so. So all the trouble is on the side of the unsuspecting user. The only thing is: How on earth can anyone after all these years since the first release of Windows still be an "unsuspecting user" :?: :?: :?:

Public Beta 1 and Public Beta 2 preceded 10.0, so they were 10.-2 and 10.-1. :-)

Excuse me lads, staunch supporter of all things Mac I may be, but we may be getting close to inviting a flame war here. Let's just keep our opinions of MicroShaft MucroSoft MicroSoft to private moments...

EDIT
...actually when I saw the topic heading I thought it was a competition to 'Win Vista Home Premium', and had been wondering..."why would anybody want to win that...?"

And I'm sure all the other Spam Assassins were flexing their virtual muscles and prepping for an obligatory Spam-bardment!

Not that I was even remotely involved.
