How to build a website?

Post by Uncle Reno »

Hello.

Can anybody point me in the right direction for a sensible and idiot-proof guide to getting a website up and running? There's not going to be anything fancy about it, just a couple of pages or so of information, but I've looked about for information and what I've found has made my eyes glaze over - mind you, that does happen a lot!

TIA.

i´m afraid that there is no such thing as an idiot proof guide...

i can Quickly Write down 1 though... :-).. but not idiotic proof

1 search for free web hosting...

1a You either end up at a browser editble website, where there will be a guide to how to set up your site, how to make a page and upload pictures...

1b or you end up where the site assumes you can write html..

In case 1a you just need to follow the online guide

In case of 1b, The site assumes you know how to work with FTP program, that you use to upload your html files.... one of these files should allways be named index.html, since this is the first file the browser shows when a user enter the site... If you wish to use case 1b, you will need to know how to write HTML, fair and Square... ofcourse you can use tools like frontpage to make these...

www.110mb.com is a nice place, especially if you want to do something that takes storage and bandwidth. ^^

I wouldn't classify Joomla as exactly easy. At least if you have to install it yourself.

What web technology are you looking at? ASP or PHP based?

I work primarily in ASP but dabble in PHP from time to time.

I can offer you some help and advice, if you're interested, PM me since the conversation could get a bit lengthy.

Essentials are:

 Hosting
 FTP
 Web site technology (CMS or basic, CMS recommended for beginners)

If you go down the CMS route, recommended ones are Nukedit (ASP, the one I use on my sites), Drupal (PHP) and phpNuke (PHP, duh) off the top of my head.
