OXP overdose?

Post by Corbeau »

Hello all.

I'm curious about your experience and possible advice: how many OXPs is it wise to have running at the same time? I've installed a few: Commies, Dictators, Pirate Coves and one I forgot the name (Toroid stations, I think) and the game keeps freezing from time to time. It takes around half a minute to load a saved position, and occasionaly, in random itervals, during combat or otherwise, I get a chance to reconsider my deeds for one to fifteen seconds. That didn't happen before I parked those OXPs on my hard disk.

A part of the problem may be that I use Windows 2000, but can't be sure. Any thoughts, anyone?

And I may be the first person in history who is thinking about adding a Linux OS to a Windriven comp in order to play a computer game ;)

Cheers

Well, I'm running with 60+ OXPs, including all, except Pirate Coves, that you mention, and things run fine for me. Probably the best thing to do is, if you only have a few OXPs, is to take them all out and add them back in one at a time, testing Oolite after you put each one in. This way, you can find out if it is a particular OXP or some other problem.

...or I could, I realised after snooping around the forum, try and get a newer graphics driver which hasn't been updated for at least a year and a half...

And I did think of what you are proposing and I think I even tried it, but not systematically, I think I tried it with one or two, and got to the conclusion that each OXP slows down the game a little, but you're right, I should get more thorough.

Erm, should I have asked this in Windows section perhaps? Sorry, if the post is in the way, mods may freely move it to a more proper location...

The OXP section is fine IMO, you were asking about OXPs initially after all. :)

Yes, having up to date drivers does help, let us know if you still have the same problems after updating. Also having enough memory as well, how much has your system got?

GAAAAAAAH

I just realised I don't have the newest version! Which isn't listed where I thought it should be!

Ok, will download and install and then come back and nag some more. Thanx!

And btw, I have 1 GB RAM which should be enough.

I have 0.7G Ram and an old PC. I run usually with a 32 fps with all OXPs installed, but I do get the odd hang (usually when exiting hyperspace or docking, but I can live with that as it's a natual break in the gameplay). Closing your browser and virus software whilst playing Oolite seems to help, but the more OXPs you install then the more you are asking Oolite to do. 1.68 seems to cope with more OXPs a lot better than 1.65 though. On 1.65 I got a fair few stutters in flight, but very few with 1.68. That said with 1.68 I do get a hang on docking and sometimes a crash, but I think that's probabley down to my patheticly low spec system!
OXPS : The Assassins Guild, Asteroid Storm, The Bank of the Black Monks, Random Hits, The Galactic Almanac, Renegade Pirates can be downloaded from the Elite Wiki here.

Hi Corbeau, welcome to the board and Oolite. :D

You are probably aware that OXP's can be categorised as Missions, equipment, ships, audio visual, etc etc.

you may as well add all the audio visuals plus whatever hud you like best, and all the equipment. As far as the missions are concerned only add the ones that occur in the galaxy you are in or going to, and get the Nova mission in galaxy 4 completed before adding in deposed, they can cause a conflict.

As far as ships are concerned be selective in the early days, there are some pretty high spec craft out there that can blow you away instantly. It's best to get all the defensive and offensive kit you can before you take on the really bad guys.

On a separate note, you should add your website to your profile so that BBS members can check it out. For the uninitiated it is probably the biggest and best source of links to Elite fiction on the web.

Have you considdered linking that fiction to the wiki, generating (a little) more trafic to your page?

As a minor side effect our listing of leet-fiction becomes a bit more comprehensive. ;)
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Category:Fiction

edit: I'd be happy to add entries, like I did for some others, if you feel it's too much trouble.
However, you might want to post only a link to your page or upload the entire stories, you may even have a huge aversion to the wiki.

edit: nevermind the yellow text. It is inconsequential. I thought Robin Sharrock had a familliar ring to it... and I already posted links to the stories on your site. writer bios are sadly lacking though...hint,hint. ;)
Upon further inspection, those diaries are not there anymore...the links are broken. (they same links as your site uses)

and: Be welcome Commander!

Hello all and especially the Old Man who somehow disappeared from Aliothnet's EBBS and is lacked by at least me ;) Well, not him personally, but his sarcastic witty remarks ;) And thanks for the replies, I just downloaded the 1.68 and tried it, works much better than the Java-779-something I was running, but some problems still arise, and definitely not because of low RAM or processor. First of all, when I run it fullscreen, it won't start, the screen goes white until I Alt-Tab back to Windows. Only then the music starts and I can Alt-Tab back to the game. Weird, eh? Also, entering/exiting hyperspace takes more time than seems comfortable or natural, and one of the most annoying features is the time it takes to open planet info screen (F7); the text is there immidiately, but the rotating planet takes forever to appear. But I guess it's my outdated graphic driver, I've never updated it and the comp is at least a year and a half old, so I may do some downloading tomorrow. And will also check previous discussions on this fine board for possible answers ;)

As for my fiction node, a thought of adding it to Wiki skimmed my mind, but soon slipped away. Just thought most of it is there already and the reason for making that site was for me to have a reference point when looking for stuff anyway. I'll probably get around to adding it, but I am a lazy bastard so if anyone wants to add it, you are absolutely free to link or copy or do anything in any form. Glad if it can be of any help to anyone. Which reminds me of repairing some dead links someone reported last week, and also adding Oolite stuff I up until a few weeks ago didn't even know existed (Oolite fiction, not Oolite). But, as I said, I'm a lazy bastard and that won't be right away... (Would be extremely helpful if people sent me direct links to stuff but I guess it's easier and more sensible adding it directly to Wiki).

Now we've gone completely offtopic, eh? :)

ahh....what WAS the topic?
Oh yes OXPs...I usually have as many OXPs installed as possible.
(The ones I deem worthy and are not very annoying (boyracer/rikshaw) at least)

Wisest thing probably is to install OXps only when you get in reach of actually triggering them. (But this decreases the chance factor)
Also running the game a few jumps and checking the errorlog after adding an OXP helps with weeding out extremely buggy OXPees.

Atmosphere and ship oxps are usually safe, but be very selective of ugly/overthetop ships. ;)

mission OXPs are more prone to bugs and unexpected events but usually only give problems when triggered. (So they may function as time-bombs)

Currently I sadly run a 'clean' ooniverse as I was in the middle of testing code.

Yes most of the fiction on your site(the mainpage) I already hotlinked to the wiki. Unfortunately many links are broken.
I also lack for reliable info on the authors. (active authors are so much easier)
If you like, I can look at the assorted stories inside the NODE and create new wikipages for them as I'm familiar with the system already.
Active writers mostly keep their stuff up-to-date themseves on the wiki.

The biggest source of OXP-related stutter is scripts. Old-style scripts are run in their entirety every ten seconds or so, and at certain specific points (like exiting witchspace). The process isn’t very efficient. Particuarly slowifying are scripts that spawn a lot of ships, because spawning ships is pretty costly. Also, the more ship OXPs you have, the greater the chance that spawning a ship (for any reason) will require loading new textures and uncached models.

Corbeau: The hyperspace and planet screen issues you refer to suggest you’re using the procedural planet textures. They’re “experimental”, meaning “too slow to be enabled by default”. :-) Scripts spawning lots of ships on hyperspace exit will again slow things down significantly.

I usually just tune down the appearance of some of the ships

Ok they're still annoying, but I do like the flavor that they add when they're not there all the time. :D
