'dream team' designs: OXP or standard?
The excellent job done by the dream team makes me drool.

So I really would like to see it (when it is finished) to be standard in-game rather than just another OXP. Don't get me wrong, OXP's are great but I think a lot of people initially play Oolite sans OXP's and only discover them later on. So if the new models would be standard and not an option , first impression of Oolite would be markedly better (rather: even better) than it is now.
So whaddayathink?

My vote is to make them standard, however I support continual improvement, and I do like the variations of the Cobbie3 from the pimping competition.
So I say implement the new textures in a new version release by all means, and keep them OXP's coming.

I love the 'Dream Team' version, but I worry that my system might not cope with the extra detail. Would there any greater strain on an OS if the new ships were standard? If so, then could you run two versions of Oolite, a 1.XX and a 1.XXHD (high detail). If there is no extra demand, then I'm all for it! I think that the graphical advancements, as well as the behind the scenes work dome by Ahruman et al, make the game more attractive to old 'Elite'ists and new youngbloods alike, while maintaining the charm of the game we all grew up addicted to.

I'd like to see the new models as the basis of v2.0 of Oolite, with some time spent sifting missions to see if some of them could be integrated into the new version, with others remaining as oxps - I realise that might be an inflamatory process involving 'pistols at dawn'...
Very funny, Scotty, now beam down my clothes...

I believe the new ship models, although great looking and all, should be initally left as OXP additions. Once they are released and we see them in game, have a feel of what they actually are like and what impact they have on the game's performance, then we could move them to the standard resource folders.
So my vote is: not right now, but most probably after they have been released and tested sufficiently in game.

Am I allowed to sit on the fence?
I'd like to see the ships packed into a single 'offical' .oxp distributed alongside the main install.
Best of both worlds?
or

( If I can't sit on the fence, how about a spike? One would be fine, two an extravigance! )

Awesome as the models are, I believe they should be an OXP first, see what impact they have on performance. If lower end machines can cope then I say make them standard.
The models, at the end of the day, are more or less identical to the originals anyway. I'm just concerned about the hit in performance.
Cheers
