Cargo ejection

Post by Cmdr. Maegil »

Something that I always found annoying: the cargo ejection mechanism.

It ejects whatever you picked up last. Let's say you have 5t of cargo space and scoop a bunch of canisters at the same time.
-food
-machinery
-textiles
-minerals
-luxuries.
And your cargo hold is full. You can't get rid of the cheap stuff without ejecting the luxuries first, and the food would be the last to go...

Is it possible to put a eject selector on the cargo manifest screen like on FE2 and FFE?
You know those who, having been mugged and stabbed, fired, dog run over, house burned down, wife eloped with best friend, daughters becoming prostitutes and their countries invaded - still say that "all is well"?
I'm obviously not one of them.

You can already. "{shift}-r" cycles through you manifest selecting what will be ejected.

Oh!

I didn't see that in the manual...

Volunteers for a manual re-write will be gratefully pounced upon. :-)

(I’m also vaguely considering maybe probing for volunteers/design proposals for a possible Grand Unified Web Site for Oolite.)

Is this, at last, a place where a non-programmer (at least not recently) type can help??? :D

Well Darkbee's Oolite Reference Sheet (pdf format) is still even now pretty accurate, it used to be on Oosat, but I can't see it, it is on the wiki here or for a direct link here

Thread recycling is excellent! Save the planet, kids.

When I eject cargo, I often find it bangs into my hull and is destroyed - and it doesn't seem to matter whether I'm moving or still. Sometimes I just want to pick something up, see if it's better than what I'm carrying, and if not collect my original cargo again... but I can't if it's been destroyed.

Is there a way to stop this? I'm going to guess it's because ejected cargo (like all debris) gets a small random velocity, which sometimes flings is back into the ship. That or it's a tractor beam effect, when the containier isn't placed for pickup. Would it be possible to make sure all ejected cargo had a vector moving it away from the ship when ejected?

Certainly if you eject cargo when you are moving and then slow down it will try to stuff itself up your exhast pipe, but you shouldn't have that problem if you're not moving.

I've just killed a Sidewinder with a cannister of food by ejecting it after WFIing at the ship. :D

What other game could offer the chance of having a lethal food fight at relativistic speeds?

"We are gathered here today to mourn the passing of Captain Iggy Sloo, a harmless bony lobster from Imbibbe, husband, father, Sidewinder pilot, cruelly struck down by a tonne of custard pies travelling at a significant percentage of C."
