Google Summer of Code project to modernise Oolite code, setup etc.?

Post by mcarans »

Has a Google Summer of Code project ever been considered for Oolite? It might be a way to get the code and setup modernised and also result in a young enthusiastic developer for the longer term with a bit of luck. Just a thought.

Pioneer developers considering student project

Post by mcarans »

A similar idea being discussed on Pioneer's developer chat:

"As for cities, I had an idea some years ago, if it was possible to let some game programming student that's into universe building re-do our city code, specifically placement of buildings, city blocks, and roads - as part of their university degree.
contributed substantial code to publicly available game
Could be something for the ambitious student to put on the CV. And now a days all the kids want to be game programmer, it seems"

"Contributions to Pioneer had a prominent place on my CV for a number of years.
And just last week I mentioned 1719 to a candidate when they asked me for an example of a milestone contribution of mine in FOSS."

"so you're saying my idea has merit? Perhaps I should investigate some more..."

"Yes, although I wouldn't necessarily advertise (only) to game dev students"

"My thinking is I contact various universities with games programming programme, and ask if they're interested in FOSS project to contribute to."

"If you present this as a possible project within the cursus, you could get someone from the faculty to guide the students."
