To celebrate the release of Oolite v1.65 I'm announcing our first Oosat competition.
Pimp my Cobra is a competition for anyone who enjoys taking an old classic and knocking seven bells out of it until it's their own customised, simonized, chromeplatedgoodnessized ultimate piece of badness.
The basic premise is to start with a standard Cobra Mark III and produce a single-ship OXP containing one NPC and one player version of your creation.
The winner gets their ship on a tee-shirt from Cafepress - and the top ten entrants' shiny spaceships will be included in the PimpMyCobra winners expansion pack.
I had some troubles opening the texture with wings3d on my linux box. I ended up fixing it by opening the .png with the gimp, saving as bitmap and adding it again as "diffuse" to the Outliner.
Yes, I'm a wings3d noob
The planet Andete is famous for it's killer edible poets.
If I upload my entry to Oosat2 and only mark it down as "Competition Entry", will it still be visible publicly? If so, would it be smarter to upload one's entry as late as possible to the deadline...?
Not that my entry is so spectacular as to give ideas and unfair advantage to others...

All entries should be visible publicly, in order for them to attract as many votes as possible. So smarter to upload early.

It may inspire others - which would be a very good thing (tm).

Ah, I forgot about the votes thingy... Well, my Cobra Rapier has been uploaded and is ready for scrutiny!
I'll be happy if it gives someone an inspiration...

Should there be a rule to include a save file too. It'll make it easier for people, without any knowledge of editing their own save files, to play with the new ships straight away?

It'd certainly help, although I don't see the need to enforce it as a rule.

Good call on the save file - uploaded one at Oosat2!
I must say that I liked the model a lot more than the texture that I wrapped around it. But, as it is, next month or so will be very busy for me so this is all I can provide as an entry...

I think that this design competition is a great idea. Hopefully, everyone will be inspired to get their creative juices flowing.
A thought/suggestion about the prizes:

My feeling is that the winning Cobra shouold have a place of honor, and be placed spinning into the "Welcome Sceen" of Oolite, you know, the screen that says "Load Previous Commander? (Y/N)".
Just until the next competition: Pimp My Python!
After one look at this planet any visitor from outer space would say "I want to see the manager."
