I have no idea what to do next
The instructions don't make any sense to me due to me having smooth brain.
So uh, help please
The generic zip is intended for those who have installed a suitable JRE (Java Runtime Environment). It's the lighter option than the installer/app which being self-contained, also have most of the JRE embedded.
Is it an intel or Apple CPU?
If Apple silicon, the installer is there on github, so use that.
If intel, I'll upload the installer/app to github (I've been a bit busy of late).. in fact, I'll do that now anyway!
There are some rather old "Oolite Starter" instructions here which could possibly do with updating.
Be warned that it does not yet work perfectly on the AppleMac (I can't start games on mine, for example, but it does give oodles of info on my various Jamesons/saved games, as well as handling both oxzs and oxps).
"Hiran" (our "Oolite Starter" developer) is a genuinely good egg and will welcome any suggestions for improvement which you suggest to him.
"Mr Flibble" (he of the bow tie and the beady eyes) was decent enough to transmogrify it for our AppleMacs.
Mac x86_64 builds of hoopsnake.8 are up on github now.
And as Cholmondely rightly pointed out, the Mac situation with starter is not as all-singing as on the other platforms. Until a new build of Oolite is conjured for the Macs, saved-games cannot be 'pushed' to Oolite on launch. The current Mac Oolite cannot use an external debugger, so none of the MQTT magic will work. It is still excellent for juggling add-ons.

The readme on Github is better maintained than the wiki. Although that one also does not indicate who should go for the 'generic' package. https://github.com/OoliteProject/OoliteStarter
