The Space Bars are really large rock hermits but with guns. Lots of Guns. As with normal rock hermits they operate in asteroid fields and mine stuff. The Management take a dim view of any interference with their operations and any mining on their patch will be met with a broadside from the bar's plasma turrets and the launch of bounty hunters to intercept the miscreant. Gameplay wise, their presence in anarchies it so that you can pick up and turn in missions fairly easily. But I think in terms of lore, it kind of makes sense that miners of precious metals in anarchy systems would be better armed to deter robberies, which in turn led to them becoming hang outs for mercenaries.
We have a couple of other oolite stations with guns: some of the SW Orbital stations, the Royal Hunting Lodges & phkb's lovingly hand-equipped hermitages. Has anybody investigated how effective they are in holding off pirates/etc?

Guns around the docking tunnel are presumably useful in holding off invaders who try to get in thereby. And, if there are still any defenders left, they will assist in a sortie.

But do they really work?

Feudal States: Royal Hunting Lodge: 2 on top (why?), 1 protecting the docking tunnel.

You don't want to be close to those stations, but they're unlikely to kill your ship.

Check out Black Monks "bank" station...it's evil with all its guns and it will kill you probably before even its overpowered penalizer super-ships can.
