After installing Griff's normalmapped ships, does the spinning Cobra at the welcome screen have a decal? The one with the comic style skull.
Sorry, the startup spinning ship is sans skulls.
Thank you for your time,

Do you mean 02:07:27.329 [rendering.opengl.shader.support]: Shaders are supported.? (Via.)
Yes - in case you haven't already, check F2/Game Options/Graphics Detail to ensure that shaders are enabled.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Okay, that was entertaining.

Went to options, turned on shaders; in the main menu, the skull appeared on the spinning ship.

So I launched... and after hitting F1, the Oolite window basically froze for 6 minutes; then it started showing some weird tilted text-imagery instead of a starfield, then the whole laptop's screen turned into a weird dappled blue pattern, and all I could do is hard-reboot.

I guess now I know why I'd turned off shaders the last time I'd played with Oolite. :)

So how do you get your current ship up on the front menu spinning?
Is there and OXZ for that? of is it a code thing?
Just downloaded Blender for my Mac, going to teach myself some modeling.
Creativity is a gift, use it well.

The thing that does not work with this method, are mission screens that show player ship as well as the spinning ship on status screen. In theory by jumping tricky hoops, one might be able to catch mission screens that show player ship and manipulate that, but I have no idea how to script the spinning ship on status screen.
Bummer, that's the only place I really look at my own ship other than testing textures. I was hoping it would really be that simple, oh well, thanks for working out the code anyway, I might find it useful in the future.

Can you try that with a stock (No OXP) installation? I'd be curious if this is the core game or some incompatible OXP...

If it is the core game, have you made sure that your OS and drivers are up to date? Would you be comfortable posting your basic system specs? (CPU model, RAM, Graphics card. If on windows, this is all usually available in the "System Information" Utility.

BTW, your latest.log is showing at least two OXPs that you might consider adding to your archive/nuke list:

Mince Pie is a joke add-on for the (Ancient) Santa OXP. It won't work without Santa, and I'm not sure that Santa works at all right now.

Safe Docking is also ancient, and probably needs updates to function correctly.

Later today, sure; I'm multitasking a few things just now, and while I don't mind firing up Oolite too, I'd rather not crash my machine again for a while. :)

Thinkpad T410 laptop, CPU's an i5 M 560 @ 2.67 GHz, 8 gigabytes ram, 2 TB HD, video card's an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 3100M, screen is 1440x900 (so I use the 16:10 Xenon), running a freshly-updated version of Fedora 26 (kernel 4.15.4-200.fc26.x86_64). (The speakers are long kaput, but headphones work fine.)

Odd, it seems like Mince Pie was installed by the Extensions Manager at some point. I'll yoink it to my archive dir and see what Oolite makes of things when I have it refresh its cache.

Alrighty.

I've just renamed my ~/.Oolite/AddOns/ folder to ~/.Oolite/Nope/ , fired up Oolite, and hit up the Extensions manager to uninstall and reinstall the CombatSimulator OXZ to make sure the extensions cache was flushed. The startup spinny Cobra still had the skull; the game's video options are set to 'shader'. Loaded up my Commander Cheaty save, hit F1 to launch, the launch animation froze at the same point as it did last time for the six minutes before the earlier wonkiness. Kept an eye on my laptop while I toyed with my phone. Ten minutes later, I checked my task manager, and Oolite wasn't even listed in the running processes anymore, just the ghost [oolite] entry for the window itself, the frozen window closing when I terminated that PID.

Here's the last set of entries from the Latest.log:

You are still using a large set of oxps. You can see the path close to the beginning of the log.

First OXZ in the list of expansions in use appears at line 19 of the log. Last OXZ appears at line 488. Total OXZs in use: 470.

That is just... wrong. No wonder your computer dies midway.

Suggestion: install a vanilla copy of Oolite, check for sweet running, install Griff's ships, check for sweet running. If all is well, you can start adding OXPs (which you think you really want) in small batches. After each new batch, check for sweet running, and check the Latest.log every time. Rinse and repeat 'til you see problems, either in performance or errors in the log.

Ah, I thought the suggestion had meant to get rid of non-Manager-controlled OXPs, as opposed to Manager-controlled OXZs.

Fair 'nuff.

I've just done a bunch of moving OXZs from the managed directory to another one, and holding down 'shift' a lot, and having to reboot my computer a lot.

With just the full set of Griff's shaders installed, and shaders turned on in video options, my Oolite runs just fine. There seems to be some intermittent issue - I've replicated the full program-crashes-when-launching issue with a certain set of addons, but after some shuffling and ending up with the same set again, no crash.

I've just managed to get Oolite to crash (with a frozen window, but not active in the Task Manager), with this set of addons; I'm afraid I need to stop crashing/rebooting my computer for a while now, but later today I can try getting rid of the error-spawning oolite.oxp.Griff.Santa.oxz and oolite.oxp.amah.noshaders_accessories_chunky_explosions.oxz, and so on, to see if I can narrow in more specifically on crash-inducing OXZs.

later today I can try getting rid of the error-spawning oolite.oxp.Griff.Santa.oxz and oolite.oxp.amah.noshaders_accessories_chunky_explosions.oxz, and so on, to see if I can narrow in more specifically on crash-inducing OXZs.

To save yourself some time, try using a binary testing methodology to identify the culprit.

Remove half the OXPs. Test.

If no crash, replace those oxps with the second half instead. Test.

Remove half the remaining oxps and test again.. rinse and repeat until the problematic oxp is found.

Even with hundreds of oxps, this will track it down in less than 10 iterations.

That's pretty much how I narrowed it down to the set I did; I just ran out of time until I had to do non-Oolite stuff, since each crash requires a reboot. :)

I've just been working on continuing the same process, removing some, checking for crash, removing others, rinse and repeat. However, even when I copy the same set as I reported the last time in case it was some weird interactions between a couple of OXPs, the crashing that affects my OS seems to have disappeared.

That pretty much brings me to the limit of my debugging skills. I've provided the hardware, OS, and a set of software that caused the crashing; I'm not sure what else I can offer. (Not to mention, I'd like to get back to, you know, actually playing, or at least reading Drew Wagar's books while redownloading OXZs in case my copies of some file got corrupted at some point.)

Hmm.. nothing I can see of note in your logs.. other than your Mesa drivers being slightly out of date.. (I'm running 17.2.8 on my Mint machine) but I doubt that's anything to worry about.

I can't think of anything else to suggest just now.. since the same set now causes no apparent problems, I'm inclined to put it down to one of those weird things that theoretically can't happen, but which computers seem to manage to do, now and then. Odd how a theoretically deterministic machine can sometimes produce quite different results from identical conditions, but there it is..
