Cobra MkIII XT

Post by TraderJoe »

Hello, New user to the bulletin board. I wold be grateful if anyone can give me some advice on my recent upgrade to a Cobra MkIII XT. Is this ship capable of having multiple lasers or seperated lasers? I have bought the LMSS feature, but don't seem to be able to add a second laser or multiple lasers

Hi TraderJoe and welcome to the boards!

The [EliteWiki] LMSS doesn't increase your firepower. It allows you to install two lasers in one mount and swap between them during flight.

I haven't tried this myself but I believe Norby's [EliteWiki] Multiple lasers oxp has configuration for quite a number of OXP ships, but not, sadly, the XT. To get multiple lasers on that ship you'll need to do a bit of config file editing. This thread has some info on this. I think there's another thread somewhere with a bit more detail. If I can track it down I'll edit this post.

Welcome TraderJoe!

Yes, Cobra MkIII XT should use multiple lasers like the stock Cobra, but not separated due to the mounts are too close to cool down faster.

Now I added this ship, please update [wiki]Multiple Lasers[/wiki] to v1.7 and enjoy. :)

I was wondering why this vessel after having done a few flights with a 53 tonne capacity reverts to having only a 33 tonne capacity like the Cobra Mk III it was meant have an improved cargo capacity on....Idling curiosity on my part but the Cargo Capacity of this vessel does seem inclined to go back to the cargo capacity of the core Cobby,,, :)

I thought the maximum tonnage for a [EliteWiki] III-XT was 40 (25 + 15)?

Thank you all. This is all pretty new to me. I loved Elite when I was younger and was making some good progress on Oolite. I got up to Dangerous and was having some great success in dogfights with the badies. Then I "accidentally" upgraded my ship from a Cobra Mk 111 to a Cobra Mk 111 XT. I can see the benefit of the extra cargo space and extra energy unit but I also had to earn thousands of extra credits to re-equip my ship with all the stuff I had before eg up to Military Shields Enhancers and the rest. The most frustrating thing is I seem to have gone backwards in dogfight effectiveness. Often I go into a dogfight and get taken out in no time at all. I have downloaded the Multiple laser OXP but don't seem to get offered that option on the new XT ship. Have I missed some thing? Trader Joe
PS - one thought was to go back to a Mk111 but that looks like it will cost 220,000 credits (for one that has a Navel Energy Unit) and still have to do plenty of upgrade to get all the previous features back. This feels counter productive??????

It's a fairly drastic approach as the OXP is still quite experimental, but the [EliteWiki] Ship Configuration OXP allows you to store equipment you might not want in your current ship and then reinstall them in a new ship.

You will not see it as an offer, nor any other changes except your forward laser should fire 3 beams now. If not then try to launch a new game, undock with the starter Cobra and fire. If you see there a single beam only then Multiple Laser OXP is not successfully installed.

Note pirate groups use more lasers also. In the core game 5 attacker mean 5 lasers against you, now about 10 - escorts still use 1 only but larger ships fire 2-3 beams, so not a surprise if your shields degrade faster when multiple beams are dancing around you.

Thank you Norby. I reinstalled Multiple lasers and now have 3 beams. I was getting quite frustrated as not only did I have a single laser beam, but it also seemed to be pretty weak. Firing and hitting on a ship for ages and the ship took for ever to explode - didn't seem right. From a progression point of view, do you think mk 111 XT is a step up from the Mk 111 (sorry if that is a dumb question).
One other question (and I apologize if I am pushing your patience). Recently, i seem to be loosing my lasers very easily. A few shots at my ship and they are gone. Is this common or can it be fixed or upgraded to be protected?

Yes, the [wiki]Cobra Mark III-XT[/wiki] wiki page list the improvements. This is a multirole ship what you can enjoy as long as you wish. The next step need not only much more credits but you should decide your main activity and select a specialized ship like hunters with small to-hit area but small cargo or traders with decent cargo but need escorts or other extensions for sufficient defendse.
Even later you can own more ships using [wiki]Hyperspace Hangar[/wiki] and sit into which match for your next task.

I saw this in two addons only, check if these are installed:
- [wiki]Laser Booster[/wiki], simply remove it if you do not like,
- [wiki]ShipVersion[/wiki] before v1.22, update it and you weapons will not break when your ship's service level reach the minimum.
Otherwise please post the list of your OXPs from your Latest.log file.

Hi Norby, Sorry to be a bother but I have another question. I have heard lots of people talking about an Imperial Courier as a decent trading/fighting ship. I have found a zip file OXP and downloaded it. I have copied the files into my Oolite directory (in the same sub folders as the download zip). I am not sure if this is the correct way to do it. All other OXPs I was able to down load from the Manage OXP feature at the beginning of the game. Have I done this correctly or do I need to do something else? I cannot see the Imperial Courier as an OXP option or a ship option. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Unzip (extract) the .zip file and move the .oxp folder into your AddOns folder.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

The old OXP packages are not appear in the managed list, just the ship will be available in a few shipyards. Check this wiki for help.
