New here, but a few thoughts

Post by Neal »

Hello everyone,

I'm new here. I found oolite a couple of years ago and fell in love with it. I've been looking for an elite replacement ever since my Commodore 64 went in the attic. I just started playing again recently. I got tied up with projects and pulled away from games for a while. In any case I started playing with Expansion Packs this time. I've found a few that I truly enjoy. I had a couple of suggestions though and didn't know how to get those suggestions to the authors. By the way I am a software developer by trade so I can help with these suggestions if the author(s) would like.

So I've started a new stage of my life as a miner. Not something I spent much time at before, but with the Ore Processor this can be quite lucrative. In any case a couple of things I've run into that I thought would make mining a little more pleasant.

1. The Cargo Shepard (Actually I just fond the forum page for this but I'll finish my thought anyways). If the Cargo Shepard would draw in asteroid splinters it would be wonderful. A lot less chasing down those darn splinters all over space.

2. The In-System Trading pack - This doesn't seem to work at all on version 1.82 - I've looked at the code and at the object references and it appears that the market objects have been changed in one of the version changes. One feature of this that would be very helpful is the chance that the quantity of a specific commodity would be reduced to normal levels after some time. Currently I sometimes have to jump to new systems because I've maxed out the quantity of specific commodities. It would make sense that the price should go down if there is a glut of the product, but it would be nice to still be able to sell it.

3. I don't know of an existing expansion which would do this, but it would be great if splinters and boulders would show up on the radar with different colors than asteroids. Perhaps this could be my first foray into creating an OXP. Especially if the Cargo Shepard change is not feasible, this would at least allow me to find the little buggers properly.

4. On the ore processor it would be great if it would show the number of splinters left to process.

That's it at the moment. I'm sure I'll think of other things as I really start playing again. I'm trying to find pages for the specific expansion packs I mentioned so I can put the suggestions in the correct places. Thanks for everyone's hard work.

Neal.

I use [wiki]Cargo Spotter[/wiki] for that. It light's splinters with shining balls of blue.

I sort of created and use manifest MFD for that. Maybe it suffices for you?

As a shameless plug, from a miner to another, I suggest testing [wiki]Asteroid Tweaks[/wiki] so you don't run out of asteroids while bashing rocks.

And as Disembodied already mentioned and linked, Mining Contracts is an excellent oxp for any miner.

As for splinter showing up in different colors, see if cargo spotter is something for you. (I'm currently using it as a rescue pilot to look for escape pods (red) and blackboxes(blue), but it also indicates splinters(white) iirc. flashing on screen)

For in system trading maybe stations for extra planets( and planetfall) give you the possibility for more places to sell

Does anybody now if Deepspace's Gasrefining still works with 1.82?

The Cargo Shepard has been working for me on splinters. I get up within a 1 km or so drop it then fire. If a boulder manages to get a little bit of distance before I blast to splinters it won't pull them in or it's very slow but keeps them from moving away.
