(Almost) the same name on different ships?

Post by Rorschachhamster »

Hi, there. Nice to be back!*
I made some ships with names themed on dragons. I have a "Dragonette", a "Draco" and ... a "Wyvern". Now, there was a now derelict (Link on the oxp-list is dead?) oxp with wyvern empress etc. and I'm pretty sure I saw another ship with "wyvern" as type sign. How do I handle that? Do I try to find another dragonish name or do I just try to upload the oxz to oolite.org?
I think with a steady growing number of ships, this is an interesting question, generally. I could call my wyvern something like "Wyvern Ouroborus MK IV", but the long names are not very e(Oo)lite in feeling, I think... (Even if it is codewise a good idea)

*I lurked a little bit...

I changed the role weights and a little part of the world script regarding the placement of certain pirate activities... and added a README.txt

I think they were Wyvern Mommy's work. If memory serves she pulled them after some unkind comments - one of those very rare times this Board was not perhaps as friendly as it should have been. :(
Perhaps a PM to her might help - she has not been here since march last year, but I know she is still alive and well.

What about "Lindwurm", an old Germanic expression for Dragon?

Check The Wyvern Ladies topic. I think these ships are not available long time ago due to missing from my collection. If the author will not respond then the best chance if you pm those who seems to tried these ships in the Wyvern topic.

Being a native German speaker, that would sound funny in my ears. I don't know... probably like going to a french restaurant and seeing a hot dog on the menu... maybe that's just me...

I could pm her and ask if I can use the demonicer "wyvern"... but, really, the question is more in a line of "Do I have to check an ever growing list of ships to use it?"

Plus, I am a little anxious to contact someone I never even talked to and given the circumstances I'd rather change the name... that's definitely me.

I'm afraid so. With ever more ships coming along, there are more and more names, so choosing a unique one is always a challenge.

Certainly the easiest solution, except for above
Of course car makers have long since run out of 'proper' names, so these days they call them anything that doesn't appear rude in any language even if it is a lame, stupid name!

No, you don't have to. If you get a puppy and want to call it Rex, do you consult every other dog-owner in the world to make sure there isn't already a Rex? Of course not. Is an F250 a Ferrari or a Ford?
In your heart, you know it's flat.

Well, it is not a dog, but a breed of dogs... But, yeah.

Still not sure, though. :?

Hah! Dankeschön, the Wyvern Explorer! That was the one I thought of.

It is a rather small craft, so no Fafnir or Smaug... but I'll find something.

As it is, it is easier for me to rename it, than having to decide to leave it as it is or not.

I#m alittle too old for Tabaluga... Grisu?

And that ship under my name (my first)... guess how it is called? 8)

Edit: Hey, roleplaying - I'll call it wyrm. Like an elder wyrm in D&D... :D

First the "Wyvern" is a flight capable lizard. First spotted in Wales about 200bc.
Frequently seen in many other lands and given many other names.
One thing for sure, Don't be on their flight path, they are well known to eat anything than has meat and they have really hot breath.
LOOK OUT!!!
OOPS..
"Press Space" Commander
If you do not see "Press Space" more often than you want.. Your not trying!

Hmm, while looking in a cursory and casual manner about the wiki, I don't seem to find any dinosaur themed names for Oolite ships, or if there are they're in a distinct minority! Now, I know what you brainy sorts will say, dinosaurs weren't reptiles, and the chances are pretty high their descendants are still hopping about in the park pecking on bird seed, but even so, they were rather lizard-like in many respects and they have a lot of fearsome types that would make for good ship names!
Reports of my death have been greatly underestimated.
