windows 10

Post by spud42 »

just installed win 10 technical preview on my acer netbook its a AOA150-Bb

works a charm. so i obviously had to see how Oolite ran. had trouble downloading it. i was on wireless and i had downloaded firefox and installed
using firefox the oolite download kept failing. i think this is more a wireless driver/win 10 issue not an oolite issue.

so i downloaded the 32 bit version on my main computer and used sneaker lan to put it on the netbook. it installed fine and ran very well . it seems that vsync is off by default and i was getting 90 ish FPS on menu screens down to 40 ish flying out to whitchspace marker.
still got 9 fps on the trading screen which was better than the 6 i got under linux on this machine. I know this has been fixed in the nightly builds but i will stick to release for now. overall seems good none of the win 8 BS but still got some features hidden away from users. probably safer that way for most home users anyway....

Thanks for this information, much appreciated and good to know that Oolite runs well also on the new Windows.

One note about V-Sync: It is meant to be on by default, except for those two three cases:
1) The .GNUstepDefaults file contains the "v-sync" = NO; line, which disables it,
2) The GPU/drivers do not support the WGL_EXT_swap_control OpenGL extension, which is required for using V-sync. NVidia and AMD normally have it, Intel drivers normally don't. You can check the list of extensions in the log file to see if the swap control extension is present.
3) V-sync is forced to off on the driver level.

If none of the above is the case, then maybe it is something to do with the specific Win 10 drivers used.

Edot: Added third case.

i actually used the win 7 drivers and the graphics on the netbook are Intel GMA950 with Atom 1.6GHz processor. so that might be why i get over 60 fps....

i turned V-Sync off on my desktop and i get 199 fps on my GTX 560ti..lol thats on win 7 with latest nvidia drivers.
