No sound in Windows version of 1.80

Today I installed 1.80 (and trunk) into my token Win7 installation to test something out.

I haven't tried with trunk as yet, but I noticed that I have no sound. The theme doesn't play, and I get no beeps when arrowkeying through various options/settings.

The Latest.log simply says:

We need more info Dizzy. As you understand, this sound problem you are having is almost certainly isolated to your installation so we need to know exactly how that installation is set up. Is it a pure Windows system? If so, what version? Is it maybe a virtual machine? Can you try to remove everything Oolite related from the Windows side and reinstall from zero just one (not two together) version of the game, say 1.80 standard? If the problem persists after that, please post the full log after a shifted restart.

Yes, pure Windows 7 SP1, 64 bit system, not virtual. (I used the word 'token' before, as it and WinXP only get a 20GB partition each, on the 750GB hard drive.. as a rule, I only use Windows when forced to..)

I uninstalled both 1.80 and trunk, and this time deleted all of the leftover folders from the uninstall. Previously, I'd just uninstalled 1,77,1 and trunk, but didn't touch the leftover folders.

Re-installed 1.80, and this time, the sound works.

Ok.. next I installed the latest trunk (oolite-trunk-1.81.0.06f5c4f-dev.x64) and sound works with it, but sound has stopped working for 1.80. Also, instead of 1.80 exiting cleanly, I get a pop-up window with the message "oolite.exe has stopped working" - with options to check online for a solution, or close the program.

I then uninstalled trunk again, and sound in 1.80 is back, and it shuts down properly. Seems that something trunk does is borking the standard install.

Do you get anything in stderr.txt when there are problem runs? Also, can you try changing

in logcontrol.plist and obtain a problem run log like this? Obviously something goes bad once you install trunk, as the primary sound device cannnot be initialized when you run 1.80 - it's noted at the top of the log too.

I just tried the very same experiment you did Dizzy and both official 1.80 and trunk work fine for me and co-exist happily as ever. Can you please check that there are no symlinks active between trunk and 1.80 on your installation and that each version of Oolite is looking for data resources at its own folder and its own folder only?

Curious.. I didn't get as far as running with the logging change you suggested.

I reninstalled trunk once more, to do the check, and this time, sound works fine with both installations, and both installations are exiting cleanly..

Absolutely no symlinks or other weirdness going on, and both installs are using their own resources.

Don't know what went wrong, but it seems to have sorted itself out..

It's just stopped for me. It was OK when I played b1ac90d the other night, but just installed 7f90b5d and... no sound.

Other applications still have sound. I'll reboot and see if it magically gets better but thought I'd post just to say there's something weird going on...

No sound again - on GIT Revision: e40fc68. I'll have to try some combinations of factors including whether I remember to delete the Oolite copy of OpenAL (I have the Creative installer version installed and it does indeed solve the stuttering)
