Split: Discussion on version 1.80

Post by Cody »

Progress indeed! In case anyone missed the announcement, Oolite 1.80 has been released. Sweet!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Seconded!

This may well have been one of the most eagerly anticipated releases yet..

Yay! 1.80 is out! 8)

... Oh dear.

I'm getting a stuttering Oolite theme playing on startup, and all the navigation from the start menu to the options screen is so glacial it makes Atomic Annie's handling look like that of a Pitviper.

It's back to V1.77.1 for me at the moment. I think my 7+ year old WinVista machine must be just too underpowered for V1.80...

You can use your old saves with no problem..

Yes 1.80 needs a bit more power in the PC than 1.77 :(

I have two iMacs with each 4 GB memory in it.
One early 2009 model with OSX 10.9 on it.
One late 2009 model with OSX 10.6 on it.

Apparently the memory management on 10.6 is not so good as having both the Safari browser and Oolite open at the same time, results in using the full 4 GB of memory and memory swapping with virtual memory starts, resulting in stutter. Just quitting all other memory hungry programs, while playing Oolite, fixes the stutter.

With the newer OS, I experience no memory problems using the same amount of memory.

Eric makes a good point, Ranthe.. it might just be a case of needing to shut down all unnecessary processes in Windows.

My laptop is about the same age as your machine, and before I ditched Vista and put Linux on it instead, I used to use GameBooster to kill un-needed processes and get maximum performance out of Oolite. It made the process simple and automatic, and made quite a difference in-game. It's free software, and I still have a couple of older versions around, which some claim perform even better than the latest one.. give it a shot, and if you want, I can give you links to my older copies.

<nods> Worth trying that, Ranthe - especially as Vista is a resource hog of the first magnitude!

Discussion on 1.80 split from the Progress thread.

@Ranthe: Could you please post a log from a run of version 1.80? It looks like you may be experiencing software rendering, but just want to be sure.

Either software rendering, or it's one of those graphics cards which pretends to handle shaders better than it does. In that case, starting Oolite with the --noshaders option might solve the problem (if so the change can be made in the game options more permanently)
