Whilst looking for contact details for John Blythe (the author of the Deepspace HUD and Ships), I found a game he made in 2003.

It's Chuckie Egg. This platform game is the same age as Elite. I remember playing this on the BBC Micros when I got fed up with flying my Cobra Mk III.

I remember that game (i.e. the original) being run as a demo on a computer to show what was possible at the time
I think it was a school showing off their facilities...

Easy….. ELITE nuff said. The first open world, open ended mega game. Never bettered in my opinion.
