HUD design - colours
Hi,
I've been trying my hand at HUD design and it's got me wondering, is there a reason why the bar colours are limited to red, green and yellow? I've seen that the developers are making a lot of great changes to the HUD options for 1.79, would adding in this flexibility be possible? The scanner and compass line colours can already be changed, but it would be cool to be able to get a consistent colour map/scheme across the rest of the dials. For the bars that change colour according to status (speed, laser temp etc.), maybe have the option of setting colour 1,2 and 3, or the option to turn off that functionality for a HUD OXP?
There may be technical or lore reasons why this is frowned upon (and as always apologies if this has been discussed already but I couldn't find anything), just thought I'd suggest it

Looking at the entries which are bar gauges, I think the only one which doesn't change colour with size is the fuel gauge. Cabin Temperature has six colours which could potentially be defined (low, medium, high, and then flashing between two for critical, plus one more for the optional surround)Robin wrote:The scanner and compass line colours can already be changed, but it would be cool to be able to get a consistent colour map/scheme across the rest of the dials. Still, it should be fairly straightforward to allow those colours to be altered. I'll sort it out at some point if no-one else gets round to it.

Has this been done?

Is it possible to change the color of the text?
Also (unrelated but don't want to start a new thread): would it be possible to make the STE box shape and color moddable? So that I can have a cyan circle or an orange triangle?

No, but you can make more or less bright text using alpha.Zireael wrote:Is it possible to change the color of the text?
Draw into transparent pngs and show as image legends.Zireael wrote:I can have a cyan circle or an orange triangle?

I can't draw for the life of me. I tried recolouring one of the image-based HUDs (I think it was Beatnik's) and failed spectacularly because the editor used wrecked the transparent background

Which graphics editor are you using? Both Gimp and Photoshop handle transparancy very well.Zireael wrote:I tried recolouring one of the image-based HUDs...and failed spectacularly because the editor used wrecked the transparent background

I don't have PS and Gimp refuses to work for me for some arcane reason - won't even start. I tried Paint and Inkscape.

I don't know Inkscape, but Paint is a kiddies toy not a graphics program. So what happened with Gimp - how was it not working?

I've tried installing it twice, and both times, when I tried to run it showed me the loading splash screen thingy and then it just stopped.
Win 7 64 bit.

I'm on Linux but that shouldn't make a lot of difference, although mine never shows a splash-screen, it just starts.

No problems here with Gimp on Win 7 Ultimate 64bit.Smivs wrote:<politely shouts>Anyone here using Gimp on Windows?</shouting>
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Running ok in win7 Home Premium 64 bit. I had no problems either on my previous Win XP box.Smivs wrote:I'm on Linux but that shouldn't make a lot of difference, although mine never shows a splash-screen, it just starts.
