Am I normal?!
so, I'm motoring along in G4 (deposed mission atm) in my souped up Falcon, trading away as I go, and realised I have all the ship I could ever want (I tried the caddy and didn't like it) and about 850,000 credits, with nothing to spend it on! I have all the equipment I need, and money for repairs when I have the time.
Sooo - I've just edited my save file and given myself an 850,000 fine, leaving me with 1,500 credits and an empty hold. I haven't decided on my back story (I'm a goody two shoes and maintain a clean status unless a mission forces me to fugitive for a short while!)
I've left a little bit of money, as I would like to do a bit of trading, and I also need a maintenance service soon (13,000 or so) and will need a galactic hyperdrive in the near future!
Any theories what my fine was for?
Dave

I was thinking I had put all my money in HBOS (Higher Bank of the Oniverse System), which suffered a dramatic trading failure and went bankrupt! the only cash I have left was in my cabin, for buying a can of poopsi and maybe a bar of chocolate (milky way or galaxy...)

Was it a fine, or was your money stolen from you by some nefarious villain who hijacked your identity?

* You used injectors to dock as fast as possible in red alert (tagged by pirates or police depending on your legal status) but a [wiki]Constrictor[/wiki] of an important person which cost about 10Mcr undocked in the worst moment and you caused a very costly maintenance bill. Your liability insurance expired yesterday or excluding accidents caused by docking with injectors which was printed with the most small fontsize and you skipped reading it.
* Put it to the Red in a [wiki]HoOpy_Casino[/wiki] and zero comes out or you used the famous Martingale strategy to start with a small bet and double when lost assuming there is almost no chance to red comes out more than 10 times in line and you was lucky enough to see 18 red in line and enough brave to put in all of your money at last (I really saw 18 red once when I spent an hour in a casino). The 19. was black of course.

'Tis also the price of a series of injections to cure a pervasive disease called NORL (Non-Oolite RealLife). Its symptoms include time away from your ship's keyboards, and daydreams about life on an “utterly insignificant little blue green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.” Effects of the injections cause the body to produce a large dose of HRA (Handwavium Rationalises Anything), resulting an a short bout of RCS (Revitalised Commander Syndrome).

This can happen easier than most people think: a small(!) problem can trigger the avalanche-effect when more and more customer get informed and start pull out money which eat up shortly the usually low cash reserves (most money are not in the bank but credited out) and once the bank say to the first people to can not pay instantly then all clients stay into the line to ask money which cause bankruptcy. This happened with the second largest bank in my country (Postabank) 15 years ago.DaveG wrote:I had put all my money in HBOS (Higher Bank of the Oniverse System), which suffered a dramatic trading failure and went bankrupt!

Well I must say that I have no sympathy That is what happens when you go with the uber ships. Take all the uber boats out, or at least if you like the look of them in your Ooniverse leave them in but don't buy one. Fly something like a S9 so you will be taking more damage to your gear and so you will have bigger repair bills. You also will be losing more cargo so less income. It forces you fly smarter and better to kill the same amount of pirates and the like.
As if you still go around in such a ship you will soon be back to the place you are now. Trust me. I started in the cobra III upgraded to an Caduceus Alpha then to the Omega. Got bored of slaughtering everything and by chance Stear9 was looking for people to try out his S9. I loved the look and so fly that now. Never looked back. But for the challenge I decided to try flying an Adder with 100 credits and 5TC (I fixed the bug in the game of the player Adder having 3 TC less than the NPC version) I fitted a passenger pod and became a Taxi. I eventually kitted it out with all available kit for it and now got enough credits to get the S9 again.
So my advice is to start a new commander! But avoid the uber player ships.

Find out about the early influences of Fatleaf here. Also his OXP's!

An iron-assed Adder is a terrific little ship to fly, and surprisingly tough - I've taken my purple Adder into IS and survived before now.Fatleaf wrote:But for the challenge I decided to try flying an Adder with 100 credits and 5TC (I fixed the bug in the game of the player Adder having 3 TC less than the NPC version) I fitted a passenger pod and became a Taxi. I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Well, it sounds like you've made your fortune, so maybe now it's time to retire and enjoy life. Take an extended holiday and go sightseeing - visit the Tianve pulsar, Tionisla Orbital Graveyard and the Tionisla Chronicle Array, go track down all the Space Pizzas that sort of thing.
And, as Leafy says, try a more balanced ship and put the fun back into the game.

Re: Am I normal?!
lots of good thoughts!
Just to confirm, I haven't stopped enjoying the game, and I've still got missions to complete and an Elite ranking to gain (working my way through the kills..!) I simply wondered what to do with all my money!
I think perhaps my favourite option so far (as I'm such a nice guy!) is to donate it a charity helping out family of those brave combateers who died in battle.
In the meantime, I shall carry on trading and shooting down pesky pirates, completing missions, and that should take me nicely to the end of November, when real life (and more to the point, a new real life..!) will get in the way - at least until I can start training the baby to take over from its father! That might be a few years though..!

Are you normal?
There's no such thing as "normal". Wallow in your eccentricity..
If you're after something out of the ordinary, but still balanced, try bounty-hunting in a Pitviper SE. Even taking the best paying RH jobs, it's a constant battle to just break even, in the long run.. my bank balance has fluctuated within a 15k range for months on end..

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

I'm glad you are still enjoying the game in general, but you're right about the money - having too much is a crazy problem, but a common one.
It is a subject that comes up quite often, and there is perhaps the need for an OXP solution. I'm wondering what sort of ideas people have had that might work in a 'Good ways to unload excess cash' OXP? Post your ideas and let's see if an idea materialises.

Re: Am I normal?!
The problem is that whenever the subject comes up there are enough people who absolutely don't get the point and start complaining about the money sink, expecting to get more money (or other value) out of their spending.Smivs wrote:It is a subject that comes up quite often, and there is perhaps the need for an OXP solution. Case in point: the Navy Victory Bonds were devised purely as a money sink with nothing in return, except for the warm and fuzzy feeling of having helped the cause. End result: the final implementation gives you huge discounts for your equipment purchases, effectively turning the bonds into a money maker, just because people didn't get the point of a money sink, and expected financial gains from their investments.
