IMPORTANT - Fixing the 'freeze' (memory exhaustion) in 1.62

Post by winston »

If you have the Windows build - well, I think the maintainer is currently moving to London, so is unable to update the package immediately.

However, you can fix the system freeze in 1.62 by doing the following:

1. Locate your 'oolite.app' directory (probably somewhere in Program Files)
2. Go into this directory, then navigate to Contents/Resources/AIs
3. Download the following files and put them in this location:

http://svn.berlios.de/wsvn/oolite-linux ... rev=0&sc=0
http://svn.berlios.de/wsvn/oolite-linux ... rev=0&sc=0
http://svn.berlios.de/wsvn/oolite-linux ... rev=0&sc=0
http://svn.berlios.de/wsvn/oolite-linux ... rev=0&sc=0
http://svn.berlios.de/wsvn/oolite-linux ... rev=0&sc=0
http://svn.berlios.de/wsvn/oolite-linux ... rev=0&sc=0

4. Navigate to Contents/Resources/Models and download the following file, putting it here:

http://svn.berlios.de/wsvn/oolite-linux ... rev=0&sc=0

Then all should be well.
Hopefully Nic will be around soon to make an 'official' full Windows installer of 1.62-3.

OK, i've had a go, doing all the usual things that made it crash. Been playing for over an hour, and the memory was allocating and releasing through the game. It wasn't just climbing and climbing as it had done before.

It's looking like the problem could be licked!!

Nice one Winston. More proof that you're a god amongst programmers...

I'm a bit nervous about this being a non techy and I don't want to f---muck it up, soooo:

1. I go to the first link and at the top it says Linux Oolite, is this ok for PC, I assume it must be cos Winston is a wizard.
2. I can't find a download link so do I assume I have to cut and paste the script into the apropriate AI replacing the original.

A crate of Riedquat ale for an idiots guide anyone?

or better still a new installer

(nic where are you when I need you most) oh ok I know you're busy, something trivial like moving house, getting married, giving birth, finding Bin Laden, rescuing Tsunami orphans, it's alright I DON'T mind at all

No matter how things became broken, it takes real dedication and skill to trace and fix a pesky bug like that. Great work, Winston! Thanks.

Go into the file path mentioned in the doc above. Open the AI using notepad ( right click on Open With and select the program from the list.)
Then Copy and Paste the text in the grey box in to the corresponding AI or model and Save.

That is basically what I thought, but without being 100% sure I couldn't make my fingers touch the keyboard, do I delete what's already there first and replace it with the corrected version, or is it apended, I really don't want to mess this up. Sorry to be a pain.

I had the same problem. I finally figuired out that if I DL'd the last link I would get a file named icosahedron.dat that actually contained some sort of script mumbo-jumbo rather than the actual icosahedron.dat data itself. I had to view the file in my browser and then copy/paste the data from there.

Give that a try my friend.

BTW, MANY MANY Thanks for Oolite!! It's great to play this game again.

Just move your original folder to someplace safe, and use a copy of it to 'mess' with. You can then always go back.
