Those wacky Commies! Also, Oolite dream (it had to happen..)

Post by Malacandra »

So I've installed Commies.oxp and suddenly every other system I'm witching into seems to be Red. On one trip I notice the local cops have a spot of bother and I pitch in as I always make it a policy to help the local law whether I find them odious or not. We dispose of the counter-revolutionaries after a little work, and as my reward, I get to listen to this Thought Police ship broadcasting Maoist quotes until I'm out of contact range. Makes Thargoid smack-talk sound coherent!

Later that same trip, I spot a Commissar Limo going by with a couple of Ray escorts. I think nothing of it and carry on trudging towards the station (out of witchdrive fuel, it's a pain). A little later I hear the Commissar squealing for help and I mull it over before deciding I can probably manage another fight this run and head towards him. And... nothing. He carries on running for the planet while signalling continuously for help, but there's no sign of any bad guys - nor of the Rays. I'm guessing they may have hit trouble out of my scanner range and the Commissar AI gets it to run away while the Rays buy the collective farm for him. After escorting the coward for a while, I left him to it and got on with docking. No pirates or rebels to be seen.

And the dream: I reached the system to find myself trying to dock with a Klemperer Rosette of stations. Awesome but impractical since they were revolving at some speed around their common centre (and some of them had docking bays shaped like the fleur-de-lys on a Scout badge, too). But it left me feeling that someone needs to code up an OXP with Rosettes in it... and then I started thinking about Ringworlds... 8)

First time I've heard of somebody dreaming they were actually in the Ooniverse! Congratulations!

(probably not a smart idea to tell you wife about that dream, though! )
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Heh. Freud would have a field day with a dream about wanting to "dock" with a variety of "strange holes".

That is a first. I haven't had the pleasure of an Oolite dream :(.

Don't blame the whole Dutch nation with what that sailor did. We in the Netherlands call it "Vliegende Hollander" (Flying Hollander). Holland is only the coastal part of our nation that did all the sailings. And only that part of my country is responsible for that ship.

On my last Oolite binge a few years ago I think I had an oolite dream. Certainly, while awake, after a full day of hauling and dog fighting, every time I'd close my eyes the little lights you see behind your eyelids would be spinning around and around and around....

Ha, it's when they take the form of little yellow flags which turn red (throwing you into a blind panic) that you need to start worrying!
