Distant Suns of Charts 1-8 OXPs

Post by Wildeblood »

This is still very much a work in progress, and might be updated frequently or never.
Distant Suns OXP ver. 0.5.1
Date: December 15th, 2012
Author: Wildeblood

Distant Suns is an OXP for Oolite 1.76 which aims to improve the game experience by increasing the variety of the stellar systems. In unmodified Oolite you soon notice that every star system looks much like every other - there is little, if any, variation of the stars. Distant Suns tweaks the appearance of every star individually. Every star has its colour set. Cooler red stars have their habitable planets close by and are easy to skim for fuel. Super-luminous blue-white stars are far removed from their habitable zone and sun-skimming is impractical. Many stars are named. Information about stars is provided on the system data (F7) screen, and may also be revealed by other OXPs such as Destination ETA.

To use, simply place the Distant Suns OXP into your "AddOns" folder. This is a bundle OXP, it contains the following OXPs inside:-

Distant Suns of Chart 1 OXP, version: 0.7
Distant Suns of Chart 2 OXP, version: 0.2.1
Distant Suns of Chart 3 OXP, version: 0.2
Distant Suns of Chart 4 OXP, version: 0.2
Distant Suns of Chart 5 OXP, version: 0.2
Distant Suns of Chart 6 OXP, version: 0.2
Distant Suns of Chart 7 OXP, version: 0.2
Distant Suns of Chart 8 OXP, version: 0.2
Distant Suns Debugger OXP, version: 1.0.3 (Off by default, re-name to use.)

Change Log:

0.5.1 (December 15th, 2012) All 2048 stars now individually styled, except for naming.
0.5 (December 14th, 2012) 2046 of 2048 stars now individually styled, except for naming.
0.4 (December 9th, 2012) Added debugger script to Bundle OXP.
0.3 (December 7th, 2012) Bundle OXP including basic templates of charts 2-8.
0.2 (November 16th, 2012) Galaxy 1 only. Includes star information on F7 system data screen.
0.1 (November 13th, 2012) Galaxy 1 only. Proof of concept, bundled with Destination ETA OXP.

Sounds excellent! 8)

Would it clash with Sensible Suns, do you think? Or remove the need for that OXP?
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Are you renaming planets too, then?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

They won't clash. Sensible Sun and/or Realistic Stars set universal values, then Distant Suns over-rides them system-by-system in chart 1.

My plan is to have most red stars at the same distance I set in Sensible Sun (55), a few closer - particularly Lave's star which is set at 20 the way a player new to Oolite without any OXPs would see it - the few blue stars around the distance (165) Knotty used in Realistic Stars, and the others somewhere in between.

So far all the stars have colours set, about half have names, and I've just barely started on the distance settings. Today I added the display on the F7 screen, and the idea is when it's finished players who like to sun-skim should keep an eye out for class M stars when planning their routes.

No. It's for my personal use only, M'Lud. "Anarlaqu" is still spelt wrongly in your Oolite.

It sounds like it will really help differentiate one system from another, physically ... Is there any scope (maybe in 1.77?) for altering the colours of the stars on the F6 chart to match?

<chortles> Nope, Anarlaqu is spelt correctly in our Ooniverse!

Not by me, but it would be easy enough for someone who doesn't hate javascript to do something very similar to the way Capt. Murphy marked the F6,F6 screen in Explorers' Club.

One other query: this would override my zero-corona settings, yes? If I can disable that function, I'll try the OXP.

Grab it now and try it out; I haven't started on the corona settings yet. :mrgreen:

Sounds great. Unfortunately I am not located in G1, but I assume you plan eventually to cover the other galaxies?

Maybe you could start a Kickstarter Campaign to found your £4500 pledge. 8)
Thanks to Gimi, I got an eBook in my inbox tonight (31st May 2014 - Release of Elite Reclamation)!

If you want planet naming (and are on 1.77 trunk) try my Planetary Compass (beta) OXP.

I'd prefer this OXP if the stars were not named, to be honest - just the star classification would do for me.

:P

You only need to comment out two lines of the script, right near the bottom.

Code: Select all

		if (colourText && sunName) mission.addMessageText("The planet " + name + " orbits the " + colourText + " " + sunName + ".");
		else if (colourText) mission.addMessageText("The planet " + name + " orbits a " + colourText + ".");
		else if (sunName) mission.addMessageText("The planet " + name + " orbits the star " + sunName + ".");

Code: Select all

	//	if (colourText && sunName) mission.addMessageText("The planet " + name + " orbits the " + colourText + " " + sunName + ".");
	//	else
             if (colourText) mission.addMessageText("The planet " + name + " orbits a " + colourText + ".");
	//	else if (sunName) mission.addMessageText("The planet " + name + " orbits the star " + sunName + ".");

Two lines... or all three (as in your example)? Various combinations are not working for this dumb pilot.
In fact, on F7 there seems to be a mix of just stellar classes, and stellar classes and names. More precision, please.
