Yes, in general (the trade-in price accounts for them, so you won't lose too much money on the deal, and of course the new ship may come with extras)

Also, it pays to sell your ship immediately after a maintenance overhaul - you get the best trade-in price.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Manual docking is best - but keep the docking computer as cannon-fodder!

Yep.. it may well take a hit, sacrificing itself to protect some bit of gear you'd much rather keep working.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Heh - that's why I installed the beer cooler, but the damn thing didn't take one single hit!

You don't have to sit through the docking animations if you don't want to. To dock instantly just.....

... the shame, I've forgotten the keys

Shift-C is what you're looking for..

(although you do need the docking computer installed and functioning to do this)

Hah, Dizzy, you beat me to the punch. I am unashamedly egregious in my usage of Shift+C, as I am too impatient for either manual docking or sitting through the full auto dock procedure - there are bounties to be collected  (although if the choice had to be made between those two options I would by far choose manual ;))

You can sell all standard equipment if you install the suggestively named [wiki]Sell equipment OXP[/wiki].

Install the OXP, then go to the equipment screen of any station. At the end of the list you'll see an item named "Sell Docking Computer". Just click on it, and the transaction takes place.

The selling costs a nominal fee of 10Cr, and you get 60% of the item's original value refunded.
