Also, it's probably not going to affect whoever lives on Earth at the time. "Galaxy collision" does not mean that anything will physically collide, after all. The solar system will find itself in a different position relative to the new centre of the combined galaxy, that's basically all, isn't it?

Yes, but a new position in a much larger galaxy ;). I wonder what further evolution elliptical galaxies will undergo - perhaps eventually reorganizing into a super large spiral galaxy.

So, no need to build a generation ship, the far away galaxies will come to us :).
