Aft Lasers

Is there a height limit to aft lasers? I'm working on a ship right now that I have designed with top mounted aft laser, but I can't get the laser to come up any higher than right int the middle of the exhaust. This is the second time this has happened, though I have mounted top side aft lasers on other ships with no difficulties. Anyone have any insight on this? Thanks.
