Average prices Gold, Plat, Gems wrong?
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Commodities
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Oolite_Trading
OoliteRS.pdf
All the above have the same info on average Gold, Plat and Gems prices.
Gold 37.2 kg
Platinum 65.2 kg
Gem-stones 16.4 g
And I'm consistently finding that these prices are low-balled. Am I simply not looking hard enough, or is it that I'm sticking to Galaxy 1 (I see little need to switch galaxies unless I'm looking for a mission)?

Too low prices to be called avarage.
If I find a station with these prices I will be happy to buy.
And then sell them at a high industrial planet.
Avarage prices can be like:
Gold: 40.0
Platinum: 70.0
Gem-stones: 20.0
At least in my Oolite.

Those are my selling prices! Have you tried rock hermits for good prices on these?greenseng wrote:

When I am visiting a Rock Hermit (which seems to be anything but hermits these days - liquor... luxuaries (for whom?) ) I am of course always buying "goodies" as they are extremely cheap there.
But.. right now I am in Xeoresce in Xrata ( Gal 8 ) and I can sell Platinum for 78.4 Cr and Gemstones for 21.6 Cr. Gold is strangely cheap here 39.2 Cr . Many times a rich industrial planet is over 41.0 Cr .
I usually don't buy Gold >=40 Platinum >=70 Gemstones >=20 .
Therefore I see them as avarage prices.

Those average prices look about right Oathbreaker.
From mains ports, I've seen Gold as low as 36, Platinum in the mid 60's, & gem stones just over 16, but you can get them for free with a mining laser & Ore Processor.. but be warned that over 499kg will round up to a ton & reduce your regular carrying capacity.

Well, the OoliteRS.pdf lists averages as Gold: 38.8, Platinum: 71.8, Gems: 19.6. I've based my own buy/sell prices off that & it seems to work out nicely enough.

No... it does not!
With those prices I had bought the total station.

Looks better - yes.
He said: Gold--37.2 Platinum--65.2 Gem-stones--16.4
Specially Platinum and Gem-stones are definitely not avarage. It is thrown after you.

Re: Average prices Gold, Plat, Gems wrong?
Weird. I just started playing a few weeks ago and downloaded the OoliteRS.pdf from somewhere on the wiki iirc, and mine saysMakara wrote:Well, the OoliteRS.pdf lists averages as Gold: 38.8, Platinum: 71.8, Gems: 19.6. I've based my own buy/sell prices off that & it seems to work out nicely enough.
37.2
65.2
16.4
Found it: http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Oolite ... ion_Manual leads to http://wiki.alioth.net/images/7/74/OoliteRS.zip

Weird. I was quoting from the one included in the 1.75.3 Windows download (the .pdf shows last modified on 30 April 2011). Looks like the one linked to on the Wiki is from 2 March 2008.

Re: Average prices Gold, Plat, Gems wrong?
I just downloaded everything from http://www.oolite.org/download.shtml and did not find a .pdf in the Mac downloads. The windows files are .exe's and the Linux are something similar - neither of which I'm qualified to open up on a stock iMac.
Could someone post the updated PDF for us non-Windows types?
Cheers.

I've traded these for years and I totally agree with this, though I will go as far as 72 for platnium.
I wont sell gold < 41, Platnium for < 76 or gems < 22.
Platnium is the most profitable of the 3 having the largest price spread, unless it's a delivery contract.

Re: Average prices Gold, Plat, Gems wrong?
For giggles I started an informal tally of when seemed a good idea to buy/sell Gold, Plat and Gems. A few hours of running around looking for a Constrictor that doesn't want to be found, some unfortunate events, a hell of a Random Hits mission (holy crap) and a bunch of visiting bars and Rock Hermits got me this:
Gold:
Buy at 28-29
Sell at 40+
Plat:
Buy at 64-
Sell at 74+
Gems:
Buy at 16-
Sell at 20+
Really it's just a semi-liquid commodity that's just barely more solid than cash but much more convenient than "tonnage" commodities. Just roll around and do what you need, the volume simply isn't enough to make dedicated runs worthwhile imo. If you find yourself short on cash and the current system doesn't have a good sell-price, the next one over probably will.
My issues with the published averages may have stemmed from not having much Rock Hermit experience so far - they drive the average price down pretty good.

Re: Average prices Gold, Plat, Gems wrong?
The numbers are deceptive.
What you buy and sell it is your marginal profits.
If you have credits to burn, why not buy gems even at 21 credits/g? Even still, you're unlikely to get >120g before finding a place to dump them at 23.6 or 24 credits/g.
Even Rich Industrial systems randomly have a sell-off of 50-63 kg Platinum for 69-75 credits/kg...well worth stocking up to resell for >75 cr/kg.
With Gold and (especially) Platinum, the main problem is getting over 499 kg before finding a good sell price, so sometimes a less profitable sell price needs to be accepted.

I also think the files are not included in the mac download. At least not when updating. However, the latest version can you always get here at Berlios.Oathbreaker wrote:I just downloaded everything from http://www.oolite.org/download.shtml and did not find a .pdf in the Mac downloads. About the average prices, I am sure they are wrong when you look at main stations alone, but I think that these average values include rock hermits in their calculation.
UPS-Courier & DeepSpacePirates & others at the box and some older versions
