Well, it seems you can't, or else we wouldn't be having this conversation. (Sorry, couldn't resist, but no offense meant.)

Could the bolded portion be the problem?
Yes, indeed. A ship with the identifier "Caduceus" doesn't exist, therefore Oolite prevents you from cruising the Ooniverse with nothing but your bare arse, and retains your old ship for you. :)

If you want to know what the ship of your choice is called internally, you have to open the shipdata.plist inside its OXP and look for its unique identifier. That is the name that precedes its shipdata, the entry-name.

One hint: ship_desc entry you overwrote ended with the word "-player". For a start, it would be a good idea to have your edited entry end with the same.

If you're so desiring to cheat, invest in the debug oxp and the JS console

Nah, sorry Cmd. Cheyd got it wrong. This is what it should be:

Code: Select all

<key>ship_desc</key>
    <string>caduceus-alpha-player</string>
<key>ship_name</key>
<string>REBEL3 is a cheat who can't play Oolite for toffee</string>

No, I was just going for a touch more subtlety, and trying not to be a complete ass to the man. :P

At the other end of the firepower scale my new rig is an Adder. I thought I'd start a new Jameson and make life difficult for myself.

I will admit to editing the shipyard plist to allow a large cargo bay (I don't want to be stuck with this thing forever) but I have left all my usual oxps in for the moment. This may change the first time I meet a rattle-cutter and die in 1/2 a second mind.

Cobra Mk III.
Python.
Boa Class Cruiser.
Kirin Sports.
Kirin XM. 8)

the kirin variants mainly the XM and CV, mighty vessels,
took me quite a while getting the funds, but it's worth it,

1. all the cargo space i ever wanted.
2. those awesome anti-ship defences.
(maybe a few more energy banks for such a large ship?)
(no more docking at rock hermits, thats too bad,
since the sip alone is almost as big as one,
is it even possible? to dock at a rock hermit?)

wish i had one off these in back in the 80's,
on the MSX computer elite version.

Which Ship?

I've tried a few! Not too happy with either Cadeucus since anything and everything wants to crash into a Caddy inevitably blowing it up. The other features of the ship are great, though. One of my captains traded a perfectly wonderful Rigel Tactical bomber for one and rapidly regretted it.
Of my current Commanders, Sir Ruthungus of Digibete loves his Dragon M, a nippy, fearsome ship with a reasonable cargo space and deadly plasma cannons. Cmdr Jerkin is overjoyed with his zippy little Sunracer Scout: SOOOO fast and maneuverable.
But Cmdr Jagger's (and my) favourite ship is the Star Wars B-Wing, which bears little resemblance to the small fighter-bomber of the films: The Oolite version is a medium-sized beast with a fair cargo capacity, vast amounts of missile pylons and ridiculously fast and maneuverable to boot. Now he's a diehard Navy reservist who charges into battle against the Thargons with at least 5 Anti-T Drones and a brace of Penetrating Torpedoes.
(I've completely reskinned it, and the Dragons and am currently reskinning a Starbelly. I'll post up links to the new skins when the forum starts letting me include HTML in my posts - still being a newb!)

there's some organic (organism-ic?) scariness going on with those textures. Puts me in mind of Doom3, especially the red one.

Cmdr Jagger's B-Wing using the reskin seen above. If I can get some better "shots" during a game I'll post them later.

I`m in b-wing too. Plain original white model. Nice little ship. Nicer with Your skin. :)
