Re: Science Fiction Trivia
OK, with that level of vagueness I think that Babylon 5 probably counts, you do get a lot of very close range fighter combat.
Re: Science Fiction Trivia
@ffutures: OK, so now it your time
BTW: For REALLY RIDICULOUS close combat you can see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlaw_Star where the ships literally wrestle (and do more strange things too)
Two ships armwrestling
Yess, guns and axes

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Sorry, forgot to check back.
Okay, let's try something different; a game ofMornington Crescent Alpha Centauri. The goal is to get to Alpha Centauri by the most logical route, within the strict rules of the game. Your move should use the title of any relevant books, TV shows, or whatever, and you should explain why your move is legal! You must let someone else make a move before you can make your next move - remember, strict rules mean that wormholes take TWO turns, and supernovae are right out!
I'll start the ball rolling, with a starting location of Mornington Crescent; then go Out of the Silent Planet (Earth) to Perelandra (Venus) - I know it's one of the standard openings, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
If memory serves, Heinlein's Between Planets gets you from Venus to Mars. Am I on the right track?
They can build a supercomputer that plays chess and go, but they'll never build one that can play Mornington Crescent.

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
We're still in familiar opening territory here, can't see any reason to disallow it.
Now this one's a little tricky - Cody's move took us to Mars, and New Horizons didn't actually fly by Mars, it visited the asteroids and Jupiter before heading out to Pluto. Basically, you'd have to hitch a lift somehow. Are you playing an Electronic Thumb gambit this early in the game?
By the way, if anyone spots any rules problems I've missed with any move please don't hesitate to comment.

Arthur: OK. Leave this to me. I'm British. I know how to queue.
OR i could go with
Arthur Dent: I always said there was something fundamentally wrong with the universe.

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
OK, assuming we're not headed to Pluto that's a good move, though with Flat Cats aboard there's a risk of Tribbling (or maybe it should be Trumbling since we're playing on this site). People might want to avoid worlds with abundant food sources for the next 3 rounds.

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Since it's more than 48 hours since you made this move and nobody else has responded I'm going to invoke rule 19 and give you a free move, rather than waiting for another player to take a turn.ffutures wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2020 11:08 pmOK, assuming we're not headed to Pluto that's a good move, though with Flat Cats aboard there's a risk of Tribbling (or maybe it should be Trumbling since we're playing on this site). Re: Science Fiction Trivia
ok, almost snookered myself on this one.. because i prefer to use only books i have read...
Lucky Starr and the rings of Saturn. I.Asimov.
in the Rolling Stones at the end of the book they vote to head to saturn to see the rings. at the end og Lucky Starr they are in the asteroid belt on Vesta.

Vesta? That's snookered me (and I had a route planned too)!

Bold move but legal - it certainly leaves the other players with a bit of a poser.

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Well, we can hitch a lift with Howard de Campo, owner and pilot of the Chili Bird, from Vesta to the Moon (from Larry Niven's "The Patchwork Girl"). We've come a long way to go not very far – but at least there's more destinations available from Luna …
