How do I turn off the MASC"M?

Unfortunately, you only get those messages in OS X. But hey, at least SDL versions now have a splash screen. :-)

OK, I'll let the secret out for Windows, too: If you are launching the game from within Explorer, you can see when it is starting that it is creating the two SDL files stdout.txt and stderr.txt. You can actually see these files appearing inside the Explorer window. It is safe to release shift as soon as the two files have appeared.

yes, well anyway I did press SHIFT on each occasion
the missile esses and spirals whether the setting (if I altered the correct setting in [config .. shipdata.plist ..]) is 10, as I found it, 5, my intermediate adjustment, 0, my penultimate setting, or returned to 10, the final, and remaining <key>military-missile</key>

I suspect the computer, although I can't think why
