Just a quick question about the textures. Is 512x512 the recommended size or the maximum size. IE can I do a texture at 1024x1024 or will Oolite just reduce it automatically?

I know it'll slow down the game on slower machines but I could always do two versions of an OXP.

Recommended. I don't recall setting a maximum texture size limit.

However, I don’t think Oolite currently scales textures down to the maximum size allowed by the graphics card, so large textures may exclude low-end hardware. One of my experimental branches implements this, and it wouldn’t be too hard to implement in the trunk, although there is currently no downscaling code.

I won’t be able to do anything about it this week on account of being elsewhere.

I may have to reduce the texture size to 512x512 then if it's a graphics card issue. I'm having fun with sub-entities aswell (i've just found out how easy they are to add) so my pimped cobra is going to be one you want to shoot to bits - literally. You'll be able to blow away the back and see the exposed boosters, and underneath if you shoot the gear flaps you'll be able to see the under carriage. So probably with all this and 1024x1024 textures ...........it won't run on any machine!!! I'll test it a plenty first (then I'll work out how to do HUD - i've been inspired by ploppy's work https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?t=2183&start=15)

Anyway, take a look at the WIP (I haven't textured the boosters yet) - I'm baseing my design on the Cobra Mk III from the cover of The Dark Wheel.

An interesting path...the ships on that coverart are smoothed. :)

don't forget the lozenges at the nose!
and with the glowmaps, the engine could look hot!

Yup, although mine is more inspired by the cover art rather than a direct copy.

EDIT: Also, I don't think glow maps have been implemented yet in the PC version (have they?)

+++A message to all Pimp My Cobra Modders+++

I'm thinking of adding an addendum to the Cobra III entry detailing the fabulous mod-jobs. Could the authors send me a PM with the entry's name, stats (if different from the original) and any background gumph you'd like to have immortalised?

The Shield-Tail/Purple Haze are made from modded Cobra hulls. (They were finished a few days too late for the competition though + I realize that they could only ever be fillers at the bottom of the ranks of submitted entries :))
