True, flying the destroyer is not only about piloting, it is also about commanding the escorts and fighters.
I am sure that the shuttle is manned with stoned hippies.

Splitting the failed group I now again have a success and a failure. The failed list this time is:
Code: Select all
oolite.oxp.Norby.ILS.oxz
oolite.oxp.staer9.StarDestroyer.oxz
That's it for now. I think I cannot get any closer.
Without getting into the details, I think we could mark the ILS extension as incompatible within the StarDestroyer extension by just adapting the manifest:
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Manife ... flict_oxps
This should at least prevent other users from running into the same issue.

But why would anybody run ILS with a Star Destroyer, unless they wish for a particularly Close Encounter of the 3rd Kind with an Orbital Station which would reduce it to smithereens? And there are better ways of reducing Orbitals to smithereens than trying to dock at one with ILS running!

This is not about 'why would one (want to)...'.
I am a novice user, installing all sorts of extensions. I have no clue how I got the ILS - maybe it was part of a package. Then I saw the Imperial Star Destroyer and was interested. So there was never an intention to run those two extensions in parallel, it was sheer innocence. Since both extensions are offered by the Extension Manager I'd somehow rely they have some compatibility. This is obviously wrong - just read this thread.
So to prevent other users running into the same issue while at the same time keeping development impact low, I thought of declaring those two extensions as incompatible. Your comment actually indicates I was right: The two extensions should never be required to be compatible.

So? How is it with the Imperial Star Destroyer? Is it any good?

I am inpatient. I want to smash down my enemies with my hands. Straight, fast and cruel. I like to do this.
The ISD is a low rider. For smooth people. People who like that others make their killing jobs. And want to pay much for this.
The ISD is a good thing. And make fun. But it is more captaining then piloting. It is an adventure in any aspects. I would like that they build more this aspect in Oolite. Low riding is not the Hot-Shot- Temperament, but has to taken his place.

Well, inspired by the two of you, I've given the ISD a stab!
As a result, I've added to & altered the text on the wiki page. Can you please run your eye over it and see what you think!
Notes:
*The Tie fighters will return by themselves once one is in a state of "Green Alert" (ie
not Red or Yellow). There seems to be no formal recall protocol. Just move away from all the other people and the little Ties will start feeling lonely and come home to mummy.
*ILS does not allow the Imperial Star Destroyer to dock with an Orbital Station. It can't. It is twice as long as the station is!! But ILS
will prime the shuttle and send it on its way to the Orbital Station, once you have target-locked the station. Just remember to apply the brakes: or you,
and the shuttle
and the orbital will end up shish-kebabed on the rather long nose of the ISD.

But what does one
do with this colossus?
I refined my OXP cocktail to something more suitable, but can't really work out what to do with it! I'd certainly love to run messages for the Royal Court of Digebiti and scare the living daylights out of various people when I turned up on their doorstep... but that presumes that I can get down there to the Cocktail Throne in Lesser Walsingham in the first place. You say I'll crash if I try it! And that piddling little shuttle seems quite incapable of it...
Trading seems, how can one put it, ... utterly naff. One can certainly go after the pirates, but it too seems a bit insipid. I suppose that misjumping into witchspace/hyperspace/interstellar space and beating up on the Thargies is really the only thing to do...

Well, I've not tried it yet.
But which part of the colossus are the bally scoops on? The chance of missing has to be rather large - how big are your scoops ... and how big is the front of the ISD? But I did see a note somewhere that Phkb's scoop tractors ("Cargo Stoppers") worked well with it.
And mining ... a 4 military laser broadside (with another couple of dozen turrets added in, and who knows, maybe some Tie-fighters too...) will extract precisely "what" from the utterly and completely pulverised and obliterated asteroid?

In this colossus you do calm down, stop biting your nails ans start thinking. You cannot dock. The shuttle takes ages until it docks for you. Fuel stations or Rock Hermites are no option just for the sheer size of the ship. So the only two reliable sources for fuel are
1) scooping
2) the fuel generator. Luckily the ISD has enough of generator power you hardly realize some amount was used to recreate witchspace shipworthyness.
Once you have fuel, you also want autorepair. And once all that is covered, what stops you from travelling the galaxy? Money should not be a problem any more once you fly that ship anyway...

Trading requires docking with whatever has a market. Docking requires the shuttle, and that can take pretty long.
The only reason why trading/transporting goods is interesting is that the ISD is a well-armed ship with a huge cargo bay.

But!
*When my shuttle docked (either at orbitals or rock hermits) I was able to buy fuel at both and refuel my little ship.
*My point about trading was not about
feasibility - it was about
aesthetics!
*Money not being a problem: there is the minor issue of paying the salaries of 9,235 officers & 27,850 enlisted crew.
And the 9,700 stormtroopers if they are on board!

I totally agree. WHEN the shuttle docks you have all the services of a station at your hand:
Fuel, Repairs, Trading, News, ...
What put me off was the time UNTIL the shuttle docked. I spent up to 15 minutes watching the shuttle fly here and there, then away again until it entered the station.
Enough time to even develop a practice to slowly and carefully use the ISD to approach the station and stick the tip of the ship into the docking bay speed up that process. Risky but not impossible.
