That would be seriously funny to watch, some hognoose grabbing a jelly and groonpeace shooting the hognoose but being carefull not to hit the jelly. If they did hit the jelly they would all be blown up by the quirium

OXP request: hognoose jelly hunters
Given the way star-jelly.oxp currently works that would be a little tricky. Because they are spawned as ordinary asteroids, neither the game engine nor an OXP script can distinguish them from rocks. Therefore no other ship can scan for them or target them. They would at least need a second, unique role, which they currently haven't.

So... just out of curiosity, as this could be applied to many other situations; if the star-jelly had a second, unique role added to it, could miners be given a script that would check target before firing?

Yep.

(With the help of a custom script they can be found even now using their name, but that's just a tad inconvenient. AIs can't scan based on name, though. They scan based on roles or scan class.)

Unfortunately Star-Jellys cannot be successfully farmed or harvested. Because they are 99.9% vacuum, their 'fabric' is extremely delicate, which explains why they are so easy to destroy. Even a gentle nudge is enough to damage them, and cause them to disintegrate.
Although this would, at first glance, seem to be disadvantageous to them, it is in fact why Star-Jellys have been so successful in evolutionary terms. No species (intelligent or otherwise) has ever found a way to exploit them, and because any harassment of them invariably ends in the death of the harasser, they are generally left alone and in peace. A nice example of evolution allowing a species to find novel ways of protecting itself.

Ah, that'll be why, a few rotations ago, I was offered at a top class Michoolin Restaurant, a bowl of Star Jelly soup for 1000Cr - must be very difficult, indeed dangerous, to prepare...

"Top class Michoolin Restaurant". Tut, tut, they should know better. The only edible form of the Star-Jelly are new-born larvae which have not yet started acquiring Quirium. As the consumption of babies of all species (except Laveian Tree Grubs) is illegal throughout the Eight, they are breaking the Law!

They must be at lest 16, and have published!

Ah, but you're being very homo sapien centric. Learorce has edible poets, and, being a planet whose dominant species are large rodents, adulthood is reached in just 12 Standard Galactic Weeks. On Edzaraat and Cearmate the Lobstoid species do not consider themselves adult until they're 80 Standard Galactic Years old. On Areran post-incubation, fledglings reach adulthood after just 9 Galactic Standard Months...
