If there are separate component images (eyes mouth body in different animation poses) that'd be even better. Color I can handle by drawing a grayscale image with OpenGL (the same way I color the text), so grayscale images would be best.
I think I know what you need then. I can tweak and grayscale a few components..

Excellent.
Don't forget to make them as hi-res as possible. I'll reduce them as necessary.
"The planet Rear is scourged by well-intentioned OXZs."
-How about the interaction? Would it be possible to pet them with the mousepointer and make them purr?
-Have narcotics randomly reduce numbers or increase reproduction rate?(depending on the type of drug, they are either aphrodisiac or deadly to trumbles)
Sorry Murgh, but I would space them as soon as I saw one on the screen. I don't like the way they are looking at me.... they are either stoned or are plotting to kill me and take over the ship.
EDIT: Looking over the expressions you have so far, confirm my (above) fears...how about another expression: eyes waving about on stalks?
Maybe if the code isn't too hard, some alternative lifeforms can be oxp'd to infest ships?
(Space herpes come to mind...)
(Noymann machines evolving and consuming machinery and computers)
-A more sinister form of infection: ship may become possessed by evil gremlins and GameOver if hold is filled.
Mission flow: a ship radios for help. (some comms relating to a contract to exterminate it, decide either for huntee or hunter)
Destroy huntee: end mission.
Save ship from destruction by bountyhunter:
the ship offers to trade some of it's cargo.
accept trade. You get a hold full of rubbish and a gremlin.
no way you can get rid of the gremlin.
You may not get access to a station (10% chance).
If you add water or food or whatever and they multiply.
hold full = you lose controll of ship = Gameover.
Only way to rid yourself of them is sundiving.
your fears are well-founded. I think they never should take their eyes off you, (although the occasional blink would make them even spookier).
think you could beat a Trumble in a stare-out contest?
After seeing that screenshot I'm hoping that the mouse can be used as a laser blaster so we can shoot the damn things! The implementation of a 'popped' trumble would be very rewarding
