Hi
am a newbie to this site but this interests me so just giving my 2p.
i hope that you guys are joking. Ian Bell may well be eccentric but as long he
is happy i do not care. in co-creating 1 game he has done more for the game
industry than most games creators will ever do. If he is not interested in
programming games there is no reason why he should still be interested in Elite,
however it would be nice if he was!.
Re Braben being "evil" and his subsequent games being rubbish.
i must admit i too didnt really like where frontier and first enc went on the
controls, and it could well be without the fusion of Bell's input Elite may have
lost its magic, but like it or not, as its stands, Elite is now his franchise to
do with what he will. you certainly cant accuse him of milking the cash cow -
this game could so easily be ported to handhelds for easy money!.
whether you like games like rollercoaster tycoon is moot (i personally love it)
and he also did virus as well, which is superb.
he clearly cant be "that" evil, i imagine if he really eanted he could get
oolite canned as it is a complete rip off of elite (hell it IS elite)
if in elite 4 all you want is a remake of elite, well you have that here for
free (and maybe oolite extended).
personally i do not think we will see elite 4 anyway. i do not think frontier
developments are a big enough company to pull off such an ambitious title but i
would love to be wrong. untill then, there is a host of other clones you can try
- freelancer, eve and the X series of games.
you never know, 1 day maybe B & B will patch things up, stranger things have
happend. Sir Clive Sinclair and Chris Curry i believe get on again now (also
from around Cambridge, there must be summat in the water here).

I do like Zarch / Virus too, and I'm sure FD's games are pretty good too, even the ones that don't suit my tastes!
I was making a point that calling Ian mad because he doesn't do what David does is 'a bit' over the top, and that there are other opinions.
Granted, ultimately both opinions are just as unbalanced, only in different ways!
Thanks bigmike20vt for a very reasonable and balanced post!

Nothing wrong with cats. Or face paint. I’m a bit leery of
face-painted cats, though.

I want a super attack cat... with mutations! Say, tranquilizer glands in it's claws (or worse); one that can take on an intruder while quoting Shakespeare and Carl von Clausewitz!
You mean like a certain board member?
The Cylon Cat is more of a construct than a mutation, but I'd take one. If he is anything like MY cat, He would probably call HIMSELF "Imperious Leader", though.
Now, look here. That is not a Cylon cat. That’s clearly a Knight Rider cat.
Get it right, people. This is srs bzns.
Dump! diddle-iddle-iddle-iddle-iddle-iddle-iddle…

Oh wow, never noticed that before, surprised the creators of knight rider didn't take the makers of bsg to court over stealing their "red bouning light thingy" eh i guess not actually... couldn't see anyone making a case over it

Knight Rider TV series - 1982
Original Battlestar Galactica TV series - 1978/9
Therefore BSG sues KR!

God forbid we send gifts to people who are a bit odd.
Next thing you know we'll be writing our own space combat games and discussing imaginary worlds with people we have never met.
It's a slippery slope and cat breeders are the pushers

Worth considering that although there is no Commander_bell or DBraben who posts here, we dont know for sure that they dont read these forums (nor people who work at Frontier), so we should probably try to be fairly civil.
Also, these guys are, for many of us at least, something of heros.
I know most or all of this thread is taken in light spirit, but please do be considerate.
This isnt an attack on Chrisfs (he posted immediately above) or anyone else, its just a gentle reminder

Dunno about Bell, but if Braben did he'd probably attempt to shut us down even though it's shareware, he's done it to others.

Just wanted to say that Oolite is not, in fact, shareware.

Both series were actually created by the same people - KITT's Anamorphic Equaliser (scanner) is actually a modified version of the same prop:
Wikipedia wrote:KITT's scanner is similar to that of Cylons from the science fiction series Battlestar Galactica. Glen A. Larson, the creator of both Knight Rider and Battlestar Galactica has stated that the two shows have nothing else in common and to remove any fan speculation, he stated in the Season One Knight Rider DVD audio-comments, that he simply reused the scanning light for KITT because he liked the effect. In an episode of the original incarnation of Battlestar Galactica, the character Starbuck pilots a new type of Viper that has an A.I. installed into it named CORA, which was able to pilot the craft and verbally interact with a human pilot (similar to KITT).

Ok here's an idea, your all smart. We need a nice disposable e-mail address to send the files from I wipe out the names of the contributors and the oolite logo. So they know someone is working on it but not who and why. Then you just say well we WOULD have been more open but we kind of like keeping our needful thing alive thank you.
Hell, I just want to give back without sacrificing a few hundred thousand hours of a few hundred peoples personal effort.
Man! When did giving get so hard!

In my not-very-humble opinion if it's this much bother, why do it?
If there's any risk that DB will take offence, don't do it.

I don't know, with a blind "cut it and die" e-mail address we do have the option of asking him.
Or I could just give him a call, not give a name. How about that?
Maybe as 30 somethings we should stop running around thinking with maybes and might be's and just have a chat. Cat, king, large one, yes.
Sorry to be abrupt but some times it annoys me that in leu of the definitive, smart people embellish the maybe, and all it takes to know definatively, is one man stepping up and being prepared to take a couple of rounds for the team.
also technically cat's out of the bag:
http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread ... ght=oolite
and has been since October.
Also this is double dumb, the only way to get to oolite is to search for elite on the internet. No one goes looking for oolite who hasn't already found it.
basically if it was on someones agenda to **** us we would have been ****ed by now. Simply my opinion. OK shutting up now.
