Actually the Chinese went back to very traditional namings for their space programme years ago, so we could end up with a Confucian calendar!

By George, I think I have it  (Thanks your postings.)

It has been stated in various material, including the original manual, that the Cooperative is a unification of various other smaller power blocks. As part of the 'horse trading' need to make it work various trade-off were made so that every group brought in to it. It is guaranteed that many of these smaller power-blocks have been in existence for thousands of Earth years. No doubt at least one of elder-states demanded that the clock is set to their history, so everyone agreed just to get them join. So the GCW was actually founded some time around 1923000's. Problem solved.

So who was responsible for this issue. My money is on one of the Lobsters, since they are the earliest form of life on the evolutionary tree, they are the most likely to reach space first. Perhaps they dominate the GCW civil service, just as the Felines dominate the Galactic Navy.

Any other suggestions?

You mean that the Cooperative was founded around 1.923M or do you mean its 2.084004 x 10^6 when Jameson gets to board vis ship for the first time.

Trekkie reference, I'm afraid/
Nothing to do with Oolite, as in 'Captain's Log: Stardate...' They used to be just a bunch of random numbers in the original series, but after a while they came up with a semi-workable explanation of what they were meant to be.
